This stuff would make for good paranoid cold war spy movies from the 70's. The Constitution's First Amendment is under attack and it seems that's ok because of one four letter word, fear. I was shooting this bridge near my home and thought about precisely this situation. What if someone were to label me a terrorist and called the police. I imagine I would have to give my card over to the authorities so they can copy it for further investigation. Then in 5 years when the bridge collapses because of shoddy workmanship or some other reason, I get a call from the FBI...
We are becoming what we have always despised in other parts of the world, a policed state. |

I like how it mentions freedom of speech with the activist groups...Even though it makes the article as a whole.a bit conflicted.. Hmmmmm..... More love from Memphis.

| for freedom to thrive evil unfortunately must be allowed to live.We are the "land of the Free" but we have more people in prison then the rest of the world. " there trying to build a prision one for you and me to live" explain that one!!!?? I am am so sick of everyday hearing more and more of our supposed freedoms being taken away. When is it gonna stop when everyone is under close watch 24 hours 7 days a week? I mean by the current form of thinking all of out founding fathers would be shipped away to Guantanamo Bay and never heard from again. I truely belive that our founding fathers would be horrorified if they knew what they dream has become. This country was founded to get away from the same bullcrap that we now have to deal with x1000. I guess you could say I am taxed with represention but what choices do the give me? Sorry but I am starting to feel that we as a country (usa) are getting screwed more and more everyday. Is my kid gonna be paying 500 dollars for a candy bar when he grows up if candy bars are even available? kinda lost track of what I was writing but my original thought is .....If a free society is to exsist then we have to deal with potential evils things and people attacking us without imprisioning it citizens or else what is the point of having a free society? I once heard someone say that the safest city to walk around in was berlin in 1939. Think about that one for a bit let it sink in. |

I agree that this is nuts, but just to be the devil's advocate for a moment, let's remember 9-11. If we get the freedom to do such things unquestioned, then so do terrorists.
I know of someone in my local area who was stopped from taking a nighttime photo of a skyscraper in downtown Dallas, again for "security" reasons. Visible from miles around, but the cop would not let him photograph it from that location. I think some of this behavior is simply so the authorities can feel they are doing something, even if it is ultimately misguided and ineffective. |

| And at dinner one of the guys reading his Blackberry was telling us you can't travel outside of the US with a laptop computer that may have software restricted by export agreements. They apparently can confiscate your laptop? Huh? |

How would harassing photographers have stopped 9-11? Competent government would have stopped 9-11, not to mention a foreign policy that didn't piss everybody off. |

cellphone cameras ? when was the last person with a cellphone stopped & asked to show pics ??

It wouldn't. Which is why I was agreeing with everyone else. I was simply playing devils advocate and pointing out what these authorities are trying to accomplish. It is entirely possible that a terrorist could be scoping out an attack by taking photos of it from a public location. No way of really picking that out from thousands of others with cameras. He could also find those photos he needs already online, and satellite pics on Google and Yahoo. |

Yup and I want to back to when we had more freedom - terrorists be damned. There was a fair bit of discussion around 9/11 about not "letting them win"...... Seems like they have won to me, based on the presumption of guilt that is now common.
The bottom line is building plans are far more useful and almost as easy to get as images..... besides a better then room temp IQ terrorist is going to google and grab whatever images they want rather then risking an operation. Unfortunately this IQ test excludes most rent-a-cops or other Jame Bond wanna-be types.

I thought the easy way to get info on buildings and layouts of streets etc was to use Google Maps or similar.
I think we all need T-shirts with 'I'm a Photographer' on the front, and 'I am not a Tourist or a Terrorist!' on the back. It needs to be dayglow orange with a big arrow pointing to photogs rights printed on the hem.

Quite simply, nope! I think it is in the Bible belt, not too sure, but I guess if I ever go to the US, Memphis won't be on my list of places to visit! |

... and, the church probably has the only space big enough. So, not surprised. Churches have been known to rent out space on occasion. |
