Just saw on Rockwell's page that Adorama is taking early orders for the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 for Canon and Nikon mounts. The best part, though is this: The price! Adorama is selling it for $570! That's barely more than the 12-24 f/4! For minimally more, you get a faster speed, a wider angle, and a MUCH sharper image! SWEET! That's considerably less than doing a straight Japanese to American currency conversion! Here's the link:

Understatement: "the new AT-X 116 PRO DX has a slightly shorter zoom range to maintain optical quality at wide apertures." Rather than calling that a slightly smaller range compared to the 12-24, I would consider it a slightly larger range than a prime. :-/

Considering that I generally shoot exclusively at the 12 side of my 12-24, that's pretty negligeable :P

Plus, have you seen the sharpness? It's worlds better than even the Nikkor, and, I'm betting, the Canon 10-22 (Though I haven't seen a comparison).

Argh. When they make these things for the smaller sensor, why can't they make it the "true" focal range, rather than the 35mm equivalent? In other words, why can't the 11-16mm made for a smaller sensor BE 11-16, instead of 17-24? If it's not going to work properly on a full size sensor, why not just call it a 17-24?

Please stop ranting. The focal length *is* the focal length, is what is advertised (11-16), and has nothing to do with the sensor size. It is the "true" focal length. This is not the "35mm equivalent", which is the confusing term that causes the value to change depending on sensor size. You shouldn't call it a 17-24 because it isn't!

/me drools. whatever focal length its called, I want it! I'm in the market for a really wide prime. Any word on when it's coming out? I read somewhere late june... but I'm not sure how reliable that is.

June is what I've read too.
