Wanna get a HUGE printout of your digital picture for free? Try the RASTERBATOR!
You upload a regular image, choose a big size, and they give you a PDF file (several pages) that you can piece together to get your huge image.

You can do this yourself if you have any kind of printing/layout program which supports "tiling" of the printed image. There's no magic way to add resolution though; if your image isn't big enough to print at 40 x 60 inches, this process can't make it look better (without resampling at some stage).
Do the pages come with registration marks to align them, or does tyhe image bleed with the page edges abutting each other? |

Are you going to try that site, or do you want me to do it? If the latter, send me an email with a large photo and I'll mail back a PDF.
Let me know what size tiles (paper) you want, and how much margin (if any) you need on each side. |

Made from that small photo, but you can tell what happens. Made with Adobe InDesign 2 and Acrobat 4.

Talking of poster-sized prints, has anyone tried out the 60"x12" panoramic DPCprint size? What did it turn out like? What res did you start with / end with?
I'm going on holiday to New Zealand in May, and was thinking of trying to create a panorama or two of the landscape. If I get a good one, I might try out the 60x12!

General, do you know of any other software off the top of your head, for doing this? I searched for a little bit but can't find a "Tiling" software app. And InDesign 2.0 is $700!!
BTW, Jacko, if you figure out how to print that kool kat, I'll take 100 copies! It should have won a Blue Ribbon! |

Actually, I think the Tiling function is part of the Adobe PostScript Print Driver (free download). Any program which can print to PostScript can then print tiles -- for example, in Photoshop, you'd have to set the image size (with or without resampling) to the big document size, and the Page Setup to the actual paper size. I think Tiling (and amount of image overlap if and) will be one of the many print options. I don't know if you can create the PDF without the full version of Acrobat though.
Your regular printer software may also have a tiling function, but you probably won't be able to save it as a file before printing to see if it works.
Also, unless this turns into a big operation, I'll be happy to try making a few of these for people if it seems like it will work the way I tried it. Just email me your photo and specs. |

I've got a Canon i950 which I don't think is a Postscript printer (or support those drivers), but it looks like the print driver does support "poster printing". :) Looking through the setup options the "poster printing" mode supports up to 4 x 4 which in Letter size would be about 32 x 44.
Thanks for the tip! I'm going to try it out. I was going to paint the walls this weekend, but now, I'm going to hang some huge prints all over the place instead. :)

oooh ... did you get to take advantage of "educational" pricing?
I just made a page 40x60 inches, put a picture box on it, imported the photo, and scaled it up to fit the box. Breaking it into tiles happens as an option in the print dialog. With your setup, you should be able to save/export directly from InDesign to Acrobat, as long as you can find the tiling option. |

I believe PrintShop will let you do this up to either 8x8 pages or 10x10 pages using their poster feature. PrintShop is less than $20 these days I think.
