So my Norton Internet Security Suite has this little balloon that pops up and says I get a free upgrade because I have time left on my anti virus definition subscription. I have 70 some days left on said subscription. I download and install the upgrade. Now my subscription is expired. It's 49.99 US to resubscribe. That's right, fifty bucks for a free upgrade. I'm pissed. After all, I've been a Nortons user for about, I don't know, 20 friggin' years...

Anyways, now that I'm no longer a Norton user, what do you suggest?

can you do a system restore?? that will take you back and delete the upgrade (I think) so you don't have to pay?

AVG Antivirus. They make a free version that works great and a pay version with some extra perks. I went to it about 5 years ago when MacAfee gave me similar license renewal headaches.

I use Adaware and Spybot S&D for spyware protection and removal.

One of the best security measures is to ditch internet explorer and use Firefox, Opera, or one of the other alternatives. Make sure you turn off third party cookies in your browser, and add a script blocking extension. I can provide more detail on how to do those if needed.

I LOVE AVG! www.grisoft.com. Do some hunting to find their Free version. IMO it works better than Norton. Also, you will notice an increase in the speed of your computer, as Norton is a PigHog, and AVG is very lightweight.

I'm very nice to give you this info, even though you're the HDR-Police. ;-P

P.S. the only catch is that every time AVG updates its virus signatures and/or program, it throws up a window to tell you, then another window to show the progress, then finally a window to say it's all done. It's not a big problem, small price to pay.

Avast
Free for personal use, online scanning available, and in the years that I have been using it, I've NEVER had a problem.
Virus definitions update automatically, often a couple times in one day, and the firewall works without a glitch.

Added a link directly to it after my initial post.

Hmmmm, is that anything like me being the JPEG police? I never fail to point out the use of excessive compression.

It's been parked for a few months after the engine came from together to apart.
I was happy with my forced upgrade though.

Free AVG

I use Microsoft's Defender for the anti-spyware. AVG has an anti spyware for pay.

The very best anti virus and anti spyware available on the market today is NOD32.

The ONLY reason I do not use it on all of my computers is that I have 10 systems I am running at all times. It would be rather costly for me to run on all PCs.

Eset is an effective AV solution. I got sick of Norton after using it for many years.... and Eset has been good - faster and effective.

Norton is doing two things to you. First they gave you the free upgrade - now they are selling you the one year subscription to make it work. They just hide that in the fine print or bury the info in the add that you don't see it. The second thing it looks like they are doing is killing the remaining days on the old subscription when you get the new one. I thought someone was going after them with a class action suit on that one (not that you will ever see anything out of it) and had stopped that practice.

I have always found that if you want Norton then go to the store and buy a new copy, with the deals they offer it has always been less expensive that way. Then don't install it until the last few days so you don't lose much of the old subscription.

I've used Trend Micro's PC Cillin Internet Security Suite for about the past 2 years after getting as far away from Norton's as I could. It runs like a dream and have been very happy with it!

I used Avast! for a number of years (it's free) until I switched to a Mac.

McAffee is free to comcast users. I don't know who your cable is through but for those that have it, it's not a bad deal.

I second this. I've used PC-cillin for years and love it. WAY better than Norton or McAfee

You're gonna have to blame yourself for using Norton, you deserve it.

I agree with yospiff, AVG is the way to go.
