I recently bought the Alien Bees 800 ( I love them) and their Transmitter and Receiver. I also own the Canon 430EX and the STE2.
I want to use the 430EX with the Alien Bees.
Anybody knows how to fix my problem without buying some PW?

Help is greatly appreciated.

You can't combine Canon's wireless ETTL and the Alienbees. You'll have to get something similar to the Pocketwizards if you want to go wireless and use both systems. Maybe Skyports could be a slightly cheaper alternative for you.

I have no experience with the AB strobes, but I thought they had optical triggers. If that's the case, I don't know why they wouldn't trigger from your 430EX.

From the AB website:

"Don’t be bothered with excessive wiring.
The B800 has a built-in slave tripper, disconnected by plugging in the sync cord, to allow wireless firing where the unit will fire whenever it “sees” a flash from another source."

I think you'll find that the AB's vastly outpower the 430EX, limiting the usefulness of the combination unless you're just looking to use the 430 to fire your AB's.

thanks guys,
i am basically want the 430 as a fill light to fire the AB, before investing in PW.
I will try if the 430 will fire the AB and let everybody know if it worked.

thanks for all the help.

If anyone has more input regarding this please post here.

No experience with this combo, so someone correct me if I'm wrong. You'd probably have to put the 430 in manual mode so the pre-flash doesn't trigger the Bee first before the real flash.

I'll try all possibilites. 430 manual 430 ETTL etc etc and see if the Bees "sting"

If using the Canon STE-2 you can set in on your camera, use the light meter and meter the Alienbees and shoot.
As soon as the 430EX fires the Alien bee fires as well and the pictures come out great. I use the 430EX now to light my background if shooting High Key.
Works great.
Just and FYI
