I was using the self timer on my rebel xt and halfway through it stopped counting down. it was stuck at 5 seconds left, then i pushed the shutter release again and it went down to 2 seconds. So i turned the shooting mode to songle shot and burst and the focusing and taking pictures wouldn't work. So i turned it off and took out the battery for awhile and it started working.

Should i be worried or was this a freak thing
i have had this camera for 3 years

What climate were you shooting in? (meaning, extremly cold or warm, dry or humid?)
How about the rechargeable battery age and charge condition? (full charge, or?)

I've experienced anomalies in extremely warm climates my XT. (Meaning above 100F or 40C)
I needed to shut the camera off, pull the battery for 10 seconds, pull the lens off. (Effectively an MS 'cold boot'!)

this seems to be a problem affecting the rebel series. I've had it when mine would freeze up halfway through a shoot so i'd have to take the batteries out and screw around. This was during a windy day in a tunnel though so the wind chill might have played a part, but it happens more frequently as time goes on. I think it's because the camera doesn't like the temperature outside and it makes it go weird.

But i'm upgrading soon so it's a problem i won't have to worry about.

Oh, i noticed you've had it 3 yrs? I had mine for 4 months before it started misbehaving. I'm now in my 11th month with it and 30,000 frames later.

It was indoor and the battery was full so ill se what happens

Interesting symptoms. All I can add is that if my 350D acts up, I can attribute it to hot, extreme climates. (above 100F, 38C)
I used the camera flawlessly through the winter in Germany and Austria in Dec/Jan 2007/2008, so regular winter cold (20F, -6C) didn't affect it.
If performed flawlessly in the wind blown cold if Iceland and Greenland in 2006.

Currently, I've got just about 10,000 frames on my 350D.
Sorry - no answers, but hopefully the additional data helps you troubleshoot.

Last thought, I would check the electrical contacts - are they clean on the battery and the contacts in the camera? Do you have a second battery to try, and see if the results are the same or different with the second battery. Makes sure the contacts are clean.
