I am going to collect my new canon 40d tommorrow and have just found out that photoshop cs2 will not see the RAW files. I really dont want to spend another £162 on the upgrade.I maybe able to get a copy of lightroom on the cheap, would this then open the files to edit and transfer to cs2.
How does everyone with a 40D workaround this. I mainly shoot in RAW and this could be a big problem.

I use Lightroom and CS2 without issue in regards to RAW files from the 40D.

Go to adobes site and download and install the latest version of adobe camera raw.

Thanks Kaveran, are you saying there is an update for cs2 to see 40d raw files. If so do you know which it is.

worst case senario, you could use Digital Photo Professional that will come FREE with your 40D.

But also mentioned you should be able to get an update for Adobe Camera RAW, that will allow it to see/edit the 40D's RAW files

I remember fixing the same problem.

This is actually a more recent update than the one that fixed for the 40D, so it should include the 40D fix in it.

The latest RAW plugin does support the 40D, however it only works with CS3.

Something I noticed last night for the Irfanview users out there.
Irfanview has done a great job being able to open and convert Canon's CR2 files, though the save feature does so at about half the image size of the original, but seems to be having some issues converting the 40D files.

Here is a shot, straight out of the camera, opened in Irfanview and a 100% section saved from the conversion:

Granted blue skies have always been tough, but the lack of smoothness in the gradient is terrible. Not sure if it is a 14-Bit conversion issue or the way it resamples the image down automatically when trying to save it from the conversion. Canon's DPP does fine with the 40D's files.

Just a for what it's worth. Previous CR2 file handling in Irfanview has been fine.
I'm sure it will be addressed in the future, as Irfanview has ALWAYS been a solid performer, and then some.

I know for some of the new V4 versions they would still work with CS2 but I just tried ACR 4.4 with CS and they now have it so it wont work. It appears that they are pushing their DNG converter.

I think you'll find that the only thing Irfanview does is to extract the embedded JPEG out of the RAW file. It does not, as far as I know, use the RAW data at all. That's the reason that it's at half-resolution.

Even if Irfanview were able to open 40D raw files at full resolution and convert to jpeg, it would be without any user intervention or control...and without all the CR3 bells and whistles available in Lightroom and Bridge.

A better option would be to shoot jpeg in the first place. In-camera custom picture styles can provide some control of sharpness, contrast, saturation, and color tone.

It looks like you can use adobes free DNG converter to convert your CR2 files to DNG, then open the DNG files with your CS2's version or Adobe camera raw.

//www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3894

The package contains ACR 4.4 and the DNG converter. Just delete ACR 4.4 after unzipping and double click the icon for the DNG converter to run it.

Sorry but I gota say it again, the "Digital Photo Professional" that COMES WITH the 40D and just about every other DSLR that Canon makes does a great job of editing and converting the RAW files from the camera...

There have actually been times where IMO its done a better job at handling the Canon RAW files better than ACR.

I second this. I love DPP and feel it is often all the editing software I need at times.
(that is assuming the rare occasion when I actually get a shot in focus, and exposed properly)
Convert, save, done.

Then I end up missing Photoshop, so I have to go make a mess of em - ha!
