Is it me? I'm seeing lots of blurry but not a lot of messy. I'm leaving comments to that effect too. If the image is blurry and out of focus, and there's no element of mess, disorder, chaos, etc., then it only half meets the challenge as far as I'm concerned.

I'm only about 40% through voting, but I'm leaving more comments than I have in any other challenge -- about one in four. I might come back and add more.

no its not just you,it does seem that many sorta missed the point on this challenge and i think they are voting it the same way unfortunately, since comments are down i went ahead and commented on them all - whew!

Is anybody surprised the scores are low on this? You shouldn't be. For the score oriented individual this challenge was a minefield. It's not that everybody is going out giving 2s and 3s to everything, it's because there is a wide variety of opinion as to what qualifies as a good entry. Some are looking for purely abstract, others for blurry but recognizable, still others have other opinions. When there is no general consensus average scores drop.

Look at it this way:
In a Wildlife challenge 90% of people may have had a roughly similar view of what kind of picture qualifies (needs to have an animal and shouldn't be obviously behind bars). A consensus is built and the pictures that are excellently done which qualify above have 90% of the people NOT voting low (really high scores, believe it or not, are more about avoiding low votes than gaining high ones).

In the Blurry mess challenge 30% of people are looking for abstract colors and shapes, 30% are looking for recognizable objects made interesting by blur, 30% are looking for something else. No consensus is gained and at most your own picture (which only qualifies for one of the above) has the "no low vote" support of only 30% of the voters. In fact, the other 30% groups may be MORE inclined to vote you low because you don't qualify under their schema.

In the end there will still be a winner. The score, however, will be low. I predicted before the challenge it may be an all-time low for blue (competing with affluence). We'll see if that actually happens, but I won't be surprised.

Hmmmmm. . . .that is very well said. I hadn't thought of all that -- and if I had -- I would have elected to sit this one out. I love artistic blur, and to me it is fun but challenging photography to take and keep engaging and interesting. I really love my photo -- but it is sitting at 5.72, and as the week goes on has been going in a slow downwardly direction so who knows where it will end up :( I'm disappointed that the voters aren't being a little more open minded!!

The main point for my voting criteria is the engaging and interesting part.

As has been said before, there are a number of images that don't seem to have had very much thought put into them.

I'm still very new here (challenge #2) but I am enjoying leaving comments to try and assisst the ones who haven't quite caught my imagination, however, I feel really bad, hammering a lot of images with a 1 or 2 so I just choose not to vote on those. Is this the way its supposed to be done, or should I be a cold hearted Bstrd and tell them why the images suck?

There is no 'one' way to vote. If you feel, by your criteria, that an image deserves a low score then you are perfectly in your rights to do so. There is an awful lot of whining though about low scores without comments. If the image moves you to comment as well then do so. Otherwise, don't sweat it.

Sandy, do not fret. I'm sure your entry is stunning as always. I don't know if it's a matter that people are open minded or not but rather people just don't know what to do with a blurry photo. Blur confuses photographers. Most people are really not comfortable with blur and I truly think it's an acquired taste. Who knows? Maybe you'll ribbon with your 5.7 and land outside the box of DrAchoo's statistical realm...and get to drink Champagne with your blur! ;-)

Details: It's time to stop worrying about getting everything just so: your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is the create the blurriest, most chaotic and disorganized image you can—and still have it be engaging and interesting.

Just finished voting --- Wonderful shots throughout. It was really quite fun to see all of the definitions and interpretations of this challenge.

I may be just an ol' softy, but no one I voted for got less than a 3. I will say, those that captured the DISORGANIZED, and chaotic managed to get the 9s and 10s from me. There might even 1 or 2 shots with something "in focus" in my higher scores; (gasp, faint and swoon) but I'm not saying! :)

There are many ways to capture blur, and it's obvious that all ways were used. But not all shots were "a mess."

Again, I really did enjoy this one. I decided early on, that I would not offer comments in this particular challenge, as the interpretations were so varied. I did 100% comment on a different challenge this week and 35% on the other.

Ditto on that for me. This challenge was an absolute joy to vote on. Its also the first that I have bimodal voting.

The images depict beauty and a sense of wonder.

My head hurts from trying to leave comments that mean something with my votes. My approach is to first rate it on the image itself and if I don't feel it meets the challenge, then I'll subtract 1 or 2 points depending on how far off base I think it is.

The comments and votes I've received indicate a wide range of interpretation and tastes. This is an interesting one.

I'm going for 100% commenting in this one. Wish me luck; I have a headache and I think I'm only at 70%...

Big job in a challenge with almost 300 entries. You hit mine already. May the wind be to your back, the road rise to meet you, in your sails... (something like that, anyway, but with cameras.)

Done. And I don't think I'll ever do it again. Not just a lot of images in this challenge, but a lot of difficult images. Where do I go to get my medal?
