I finished voting and its nice looking at the shots I gave 8+ scores. When it comes right down to it, no matter what your interpretation of this challenge is the basic question remains: Do you like what you see? I have to admit that there were a lot that met the challenge but I just didn't enjoy looking at them. They weren't aesthetically pleasing to my eye so I scored them low and carried on. I think I may go through again and adjust however. Average score given was surprising average by the way (5.5 ish I believe)

This challenge has taught me one thing, hence the learning phase of DPC. Don't bother entering these kind of challenges!!

All the time we strive for sharpness and clarity, and are faced with creating a drunken, messy of a shot. And, when we do create such a photo, we are blasted and voted low, so what is the real point of this exercise? I am seriously worried about the sort of challenges we have been getting lately. Perhaps it is time to concentrate on personal photos, and forget the increasingly bizarre challenges.

We will do anything for the Olympics!! But, time is running out.

I should have known better...these kinds of obscure challenges always vote badly. Everyone is looking for something different...and the description only lends to the confusion!! Someone kick me in the butt the next time I am thinking about entering one of THESE challenges!

There was another open challenge you could have entered if you found this one too unpleasant.

Yep, that's okay if you live near a factory or industrial plant! But out here in the wilds, the closest you get to pollution is a shopping trolley in a stream, now that's likely to score really high!! Right!

mabe its just my left brain(my artschool side) but i really thought this challenge was going to be a more relaxed, artsy, fun type of challenge,(i realize my picture might just suck but DAMN!LOL) any heavy hitters surprised by their scores?
03/12/2008 07:49:40 PM · #84
I SO didn't want to vote on this one - but did and was SO GLAD I did.

I saw some absolutely BEAUTIFUL images in there. I must say I didn't comment - might go back later and do so, but I voted many high, because they deserved it!

What I love about DPC is that they push us to challenge ourselves to create art we normally wouldn't on our own. It's all about learning new techniques for me and learning what actually appeals to people.

I think it's great that DPC really allows us to stretch our boundaries. I wish I had entered this. I really wanted to, but it's been a hard week (personally and professionally) so I wasn't able to get my photo completed in time. I really need to get back into challenges!

it did say in the challenge requirements to make it a blurry mess and still have it interesting and captivating. im basing my votes on if it captures my imagination and intrigues me - then im giving higher scores. a hazy but otherwise clear photo just doesnt cut it for me! meh, photography is just another art form so everyone will have a different opinion on what is good :)

It's actually a 3 and I wouldn't have left a comment, but for some crazy reason I felt compelled - almost required - to leave a comment. ;-P

You have rated 135 of 293 images (46%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 42 images (14%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.3111

I seem to like more than I dislike ;-) Some very different interpretations amongst my highest scorers, too. I found a few that defied my expectations but worked really well the longer I looked at them. Commented on the first 10% (blame Melethia) and then a few later on, randomly. Will be back to bump and maybe vote some more later.

I'm starting to understand...

After voting and commenting on the first twenty or so entries, I'm finding that I'm scoring lower than I do other (more conventional) challenges. I'm seeing a lot of blurry, but not a lot of messy. I'm leaving more comments than I normally do too. What a ride!

Yes. It's tiring. I'm going to bed. I'll get the other 73% tomorrow. Or the next day...

As a newbie, I'm glad it isn't just me having difficulty scoring this challenge. How do you score / compare a beautifully composed in focus shot with minor bokeh vs. an abstract vs. a just poor photo? I kept thinking of the engaging and interesting requirement as a guide.

I think about the only way of rating it is to ask: "Do I like it?"
