Watching the score on my Feb Free Study entry...and WOW! It looks like I am going to be setting a new personal best by a wide margin!

What is surprising...this photo was taken with my tiny Canon SD300 4MP P&S, NOT my D70s SLR.

I was on vacation and decided to leave the D70s in the hotel room safe because I was worried about damaging it that day (D70 bodies are not weatherproof). Of course my trusty SD300 was tucked away in a jacket pocket un-noticed. When I came upon my subject I had to snap a few shots, and they turned out beautifully. Sure, they might have been a bit better with the D70s, but they where infinitely better than I would have got had I brought no camera at all. ;-) (the SD300 is horribly noisy by SLR standards, I'd say the noise at ISO 50 is the same as ISO 800 on the D70s...but Neat Image cleaned them up wonderfully)

If you do not have a little digital pocket camera, I highly recommend getting one, and bring it with you whenever possible...you never know when that perfect shot will present itself. :-)

It is never the equipment.

It is always the forethought and the execution.

Knowing why you click the shutter is half the battle to good imagery.

Some times its having the forethought to bring the right equipment.

Though in general, its right. I don't think I can personally remember any
significant or well regarded image that's considered a classic photograph, that
was taken with a long lens, for example.

In general, I can agree with this statement.

I don't believe your blackberry can do a better job than your 1D M3 in capturing 10 frames during a baseball game, but, if all you have is your blackberry, then you must make due with what you have.

Knowing your equipment is the other half of the battle.

Very true. Many winning photos are this site were taken with expensive equipment because that is what people tend to get once they become enthusiasts, however there are also many great shots that were taken with very modest cameras.

I've also seen lots of high quality junk taken with SLR's

While all this is very true, do keep in mind we are talking 700 pixels here... At this size, you can get away with a lot as far as de-noising and sharpening is concerned.

If you wanted to print an 8x10, things would be different.

Congratulations! It's a nice feeling, isn't it? :)

I think often there's a tendency to obsess about lens sharpness, image resolution, noise, lack of motion blur and other technical nits when the pictures don't have anything else to commend them.

I bought my wife a P&S and we have gotten some of my favorite family shots on trips when the DSLR was just too much to carry...

Gordon, Should we soon expect an entry from you taken with the blackberry? ;P

I have submitted photos here using three different cameras- and my highest score was taken with my P&S camera. My next two were taken with a prosumer zoom camera. Not my D80. Congratulation on the best score- those feel really good!

Challenge is over, and it is my best score yet:

Got second highest rating for the camera on this site too. :-)

Some outtakes from that day:

My highest score ever was shot with a Canon G2

Mine was with a G2 as well. Sometimes the P&S camera is the most convenient. I took this pic out the airplane window and it would have not been possible or convenient to get out all my DSLR equipment. This pic took second place in the Black and White challenge.
