How do you feel about the comment system currently?
1. Leave the system the way it is (means Don't Change)
2. Give comment recipients complete control to delete (means Change)
3. SC should give greater weight to the opinions of... (means Change)
4. Allow a very limited number of deletions per year (means Change)

Does that mean (at the rollover) options 2, 3 and 4 will be summed against option 1?

PS: I think the poll doesn't focus the main question.
- "Should be give rights to the Photographer to have Editorial Control Over Comments on his work?"

That question is posed in the poll- 2. Give comment recipients complete control to delete (means Change)

I get the impression that they put other options in there for those who sit on the fence between the two, a compromise if you will.

I agree, I don't think the poll is laid out very well.

Exactly same thing I was thinking. The poll is cleverly designed to be skewed. If you do not want option (1) you have opposite options broken into pieces so that option one would come out on top. As is the desired outcome by designer of this poll.

If the poll is worded like this:

Do you want complete editorial control over comments you recieve and on your photo?
1. Yes
2. No

the results would be different. But then where is the fun in mind games.

Yeh, sure. I do get the impression that they put other options to split the votes "against" the actual(*) situation.
(*) The Photographer has no rights at all.

You guys have been watching too many Oliver Stone movies, lol. First, he doesn't really even need to poll the place, he could just do what he wants. Second, that is assuming that if there were only two option then the people who choose the the two deversion options would actually vote the way of total control, some would probably go for total control and some would not. Third, and I know it's still really early in the poll but if you add the three options together they still don't equal the keep it the way it is option.

There really are just two options to question 1: change/don't change
If change (options 2+3+4) is greater than don't change (option 1), then how to change will have been already polled.
It is rather simple and not at all in some class of conspiracy to misdirect the poll.

Wow, some people really do assume the world is out to get them.

So far, "leave it alone" has nearly double the votes of the other three options combined: 160 to 28/41/28.

Trevor,
I'm sure, one day, Editorial Control Over Comments will be given to the Photographer (it's a right that must assist the owner of the photo), but I'm not expecting that to happen right now cause when you deal with majorities things go very slow (you can't do nothing about that, just be patient).
But I insist, cause it seams that people (you included) aren't focused in the true problem around here. It's your work, made with all of your efforts (sometimes many hours and days of your precious time) and you can't control the action of a viewer which (in only 3 seconds) leaves a comment over your job. That's not fair, you know?

Option #3 (and its 41 votes) is really to leave the system as it is, but to strongly encourage the SC to expand the current definition of what's considered an "offensive" comment.

I'm disappointed that my "submit for clarification" button idea wasn't included in the poll. It was a compromise I suggested early in the discussion that seemed to have support from some of the community and some of the SC.

It allowed the commenter to clear up any miscommunication if there was any and if nothing was done about it then it would be handed to the SC to decide in a couple of days. Not a magic delete button. Not any more work for the SC. Potentially a way for this whole thing to be resolved.

What do you think about the poll?
A) Leave it as is.
B) Change it to something we can all agree on while we huddle together trying to stay warm in a frozen hell watching a flock of pigs circling above.
C) Who f'ing cares - this is, as always, much ado about nothing.
----------------------------------------------------------------

Can anyone guess my answer?

I understand where you are coming from and I respect your position, I just happen to disagree. I really don't want to start into my reasoning or rebutting yours b/c it's all been done in the other threads so I'll leave it at that. Trevor~

Would it be the secrete torch the place option?

There is nothing that stops you from sending a polite PM to the comment author to request clarification. In fact, it's the path we usually recommend.

right, but there should be a button to make it easier and automate the e-mail and if after x number of days the commenter either doesn't respond or refuses to change their comment then the SC would delete / hide that comment unless it was clearly constructive criticism about the photo. It a little give and take on both sides.

We could also poll - if you got an e-mail asking if you could please clarify a comment you made would you:
a) try and clarify the comment
b) have the comment deleted all together
c) just ignore the request

Another poll, please...

Would you be in favor of the ability to delete up to a total three of your challenge entries per year? Please?? :-)

I guess "B", "...watching the flock of pigs circling above." Do I win?

i don't know ...
i feel this is the one of most useless poll ever created here... i know there were some issues/threads
about comments editorial but i think if any changes will be made there will be even more unsatisfied
peeps around here ... so? leave it as it is.

I'm getting friggin tired and haven't felt a desire to comment or vote for a long time now and all this stupid delete talk is increasing that feeling even more.

Sometimes it looks like DPC has become a group hug site where everyone only wants positive comments and with a lot of sucking toes going on.

I used to spent hours a day here. Now it is one hour a week....

Oh dear. I know I missed the memo on that part. (Just post stuff to your portfolio and I'll wander by on occasion to check it out - promise!)

My vote goes for the first option- don't change.

The editorial control over the comments would be a step in the right direction but not nearly enough. We should be given control over the scores our photographs get as well. That is, we should be able to delete the votes we find offensive. I, for one, feel so insulted when an entry of mine scores below 6.50 that I have a nervous breakdown and start foaming at the mouth. Needless to say that my models, even though they are generally not of the Homo sapiens species, have feelings too and get equally (and righfully) upset when they hear the bad news. Moreover, in the hypothetical case that someone entertains the idea of hiring me as a photographer, what if they visit my DPC portfolio, see bunch of below 6.50 scores, get cold feet and give up on that idea! I'd miss a great opportunity to make a truckload of money just because some DPC voters are not capable of appreciating my grand artistry and craftsmanship. No, that is not acceptable. If Langdon doesn't want to have his butt dragged to court for causing not only material loss but also extreme distress and emotional harm, he should give us total control over the votes as well as over the comments our photographs receive.

Tycho, that's the most sensible proposal to be tossed into the ring this week! Thank you for helping start my day with a smile. All is not lost. :)

Agree with Az. It seems to me that is a bit boring to see this aspect again and again.
Can you please direct me to some of that comments you would like to delete? I can asume that some people is more rude than other, and that some people hasn't got english as the first language, so some expresions can sound more rude than intended.
I receive comments I both like and dislike. Or agree or disagree. But if I upload to a photographic web a photo I know someone can say something I don't like to listen, but then I can choose if I want to keep posting to that website.
Please understand me, I'm not saying you can leave an insulting comment, I'm talking about critiques. For example, a comment as "I don't like this image at all" for me wouldn't be quite helpful (doesn't help me to improve), it's an opinion that I can desagree, but I can assume somebody else doesn't like my shot at all.

Álex.
