Commenting and why I no longer will for images I score lower.

It's due to a PM I received from a another member. Although young by their profile, they must not have been taught manners, and certainly weren't taught how to write a complete sentence. I have been photographing and judging longer then this person has been alive. Simply put, I will not tolerate being called names for expressing my opinion by commenting.

I suspect I am not the only person who has received a nasty gram from this member. This may be contributing to the many complaints I have read regarding lack of comments overall. Since scoring is based on on "secret ballot", and I have no way to know if I am commenting on this persons work, I have decided to no longer comment on anything I score low, or have a negative or constructive comment on.

This person has really turned me off to the DPC.

Report the PM to SC and let them take care of it. That's what they do! And they do it really well.
02/20/2008 09:13:33 PM · #3
The better response would be to report the PM and the comment which spawned it (Help > Contact menu), and let the site discipline the sender if necessary. Site rules specifically prohibit users from harassing each other via the PM system or any other means.

This is indeed an unfortunate trend which is significantly affecting the site's ability to fulfill its stated goals, however, I'd like to remind everyone that if you let unacceptable behavior on the part of others change the way you do things, then the "terrorists will have won" as they say these days.

Keep commenting, report any truly out-of-line responses, and we will (figuratively) send in the Marines.

Just as a curiosity do you tell them in the comment what score you are giving them? I know some people do that. I dont i believe the balot is secret for a reason... however good or bad I always try to suggest how a photo can be improved, I rarely give 10's which means that rarely do i think a picture is 100% perfect so Im going to offer suggestion to as many photographers as I have time to comment on... I always appreciate feed back on my work Its dissapointing to see that a bad apple could spoil one of the most benificial aspects of this sight. I agree with Kawesttex if you have an issue let SC know,

I just took a peek at the comments you've left that are visible, and overall you do a nice job of relaying your thoughts in a constructive/positive way.

Don't let one bad apple turn you off to leaving feedback. I have no idea of your background as you're fairly new here, so I don't know if you've developed thicker skin anywhere else or not. There's no excuse for rude PM's, and most of the time that just shows a level of immaturity or lack of self-confidence on their part.

Laugh it off. It's not worth getting worked up over. Really. :-)

I, too, looked at your comments: constructive and helpful, one and all. You can comment on mine any ol' time!

Thank you everyone. I did as suggested and sent it to SC. I'm sure in the overall scheme of things, the name I was called is minor league, but negative nonetheless.

Thank you for the words regarding the feedback I have left. No, I do not state in my feedback what score I am giving. I try to use general terms like, I would have scored higher if....

Maybe, I am just fed up with the youth of todays lack of respect, manners, and decorum. Normally, I have a prety thick skin. This person just really got my temper up.

I really don't see why you have to bring the person's age into it. It's irritating, adds little to the discussion and frankly a cliched example of the older generation falling into the trap of thinking that the younger generations are somehow morally and socially inferior.

However, as others have mentioned, I looked at your comments and it would be a shame if you stopped. I'm sure almost everyone on this site would appreciate that kind of constructive and helpful advice.

You could also, of course, hide your identity for comments made during voting. That way the individual would have to wait until voting was over to reply with a PM and they might have seen sense by then - especially if they receive multiple similar comments...

I too got a negative, rude PM regarding a comment I made, quite some time ago, though I just laughed it off as the sender was obviously deluded. While my comment may have been harsh, it was perfectly reasonable as the shot, if I recall correctly, was particularly poor.

I may actually dig it out and report it to SC and follow proceedure to weed out the undesireables.

I feel your pain Tiggr33, it's happened to me too some time ago and I thought about stopping to comment. But then again, I get much more positive PMs over my comments (after the vote, as it should be) than negative ones. Looking at the tone and content of your comments, this will probably (should!) apply to you as well. Just focus on the good ones, don't let the exceptions ruin your day. :-) And don't let the community miss out on your quality comments, because of some idiot.

Oh, btw, I am pretty sure that this single idiot is not representative of 'the youth of todays'. I meet many kind young people, both on the net and IRL. Don't blame an entire age group for the misbehavior of a couple of idiots. ;-)

In many other arenas I comptete in, their is a seperate youth division, for numerous reasons. Cliche or not, the youth of today concerns me. I saw from your profile that you are younger then me, but old enough to have finished HS and either in school or working. The person who PM'd me was much younger then you. I find that many of the younger generation lack respect, in one form or the other. I believe you do not fall into that category. I also believe there is a a large difference between the attitude of teens from both sides of the pond. I have traveled Europe and it may just be the lackadaisical attitude of American youth. I haven't fallen into a trap. I can say my persoanlly opinion is the youth of America scares me. I apologize for assumptive statement applying to all youth.

I looked over my preferences, unless I am looking at the wrong place, this is only a benefit for paid members which I am not.

It may be just a matter of time, I leave a lot of comments and have not received a single nasty PM in response to one yet. But, I have gotten a number of nice ones thanking me and sometimes asking for more explanation.
02/21/2008 08:39:46 AM · #15
Oh don't stop commenting, I love getting comments, good and bad, it helps me. I have one picture that I got a comment on about the background and it blew me away. Becuase on ym computer I coudnt see anything but pitch black, they saw all sorts of weird things. That when I tilted my monitor (laptop) I could see them too.

SO now I know something that really hurt my picture and would never have known about it, until this person left a comment.

So please, carry on commenting!!!

Just add an email filter that sends all PM's to the spam bin.

@spaz -- then if you receive a dq request, or a re-request when we haven't heard from you, and you get dq'ed, please don't get mad. (those tend to get thrown away on occasion as well.)

@Tigg33 -- thanks for reporting it. We are dealing with it.

First of All, I am grateful to know that I am not the only one who is distressed over the lack of respect, real understanding as to the purpose of constructive criticism, and wisdom as to what is truly important to one's existence...in the world today!

A prevailing opinion in modern Society appears to be that speed in satisfying needs & wants, and encouragement in personal gratification are the only characteristics that are valued by recipients...across the board.

This website is called, Digital Photography CHALLENGE. I have been personally challenged here in many ways beyond just the photography.

(I still make way too many scores below 5.0, but I know that the fault is my own, not the voters...since it is "secret ballot." I have no disagreement with the scores, since I know that I still have much to do to improve my photos to warrant high scores.)

Even knowing that this statement will make me an oddity, I must state it for the record. "Some of my favorite times at DPC have been in the forums when other photographers have challenged my beliefs in ways that make me stretch mentally."

The fact that I am a Christian affords me no special protection from harsh treatment nor opinions in this life...I desire none! If I can't present my beliefs in such an excellent way that they would be at least considered, then they should be rejected and "scored badly."

Yet, with challenge being the name of the game here, my beliefs are just as worthy as anybody else's beliefs. As such they should be given a respectful hearing that does not label them "Pushy" just because they are stated confidently.

I believe my beliefs! No one may steal them from me, nor even attempt to do so! By the same token, no one may accuse me of stealing another's beliefs because I state my own.

Every special interest in the world demands to be heard, even if it offends my beliefs! By this logic, the prevailing opinion seems to be (from my viewpoint at least) that offense is no longer a valued "police man" against opinion.

Bottom Line: Your opinion is just as necessary to the educational process of this website as any other opinion.

(FYI- I have made nearly 3000 comments in my time with DPC that spans more than two years. Too many have been "off-the-cuff" & unwise causing me to have to explain myself and make corrections where needed. However, these have always been comments where I was trying to be funny, and failed miserably. Thankfully, I have never had a technical comment treated harshly because - I think - I always try to point out something I like about a photo along with something that I think might improve the photo.)

I am no saint, but I do want to express respect as often as I can consistently do so...

Speaking of erroneous generalizations.......nobody said anything about morally or socially inferior.

What I notice almost CONSTANTLY is a tendency of youth to generalize and assume that their limited experience is enough to base a trend/theory/behavior upon at which point they make broad sweeping statements that are often painfully wrong and reflect their inexperience.

Not that this is always the case.....I work for a man half my age who has more natural aptitude for the job than I have acquired in my 35 years of experience in the field.

Where I'm valuable is taking care of details and annoyances that I'm familiar with, and have experience, simply because I've been there, done that, and he hasn't.

But I'll never be able to duplicate the natural way he has that's just part of his persona.

You cannot replicate experience, just as you cannot learn aptitude.

Nic,
I took to heart all the postives given here to continue with commenting. I also feel SC did a good job, and shouldn't let this one inmature individual damper me. Now, I'll have to look at my comments when this one closes to see what I said about your shot. Just as habit, I do not disclose scores in commentary unless a pressing reason too.

You have inspired me to go back to commenting. I used to comment quite a bit but stopped completely after someone quoted one of my comments in a discussion thread to make fun of it. I'm now voting on the Peace challenge and I'm going to try to vote on every one.

Update
As noted on a previous post, I notified SC regarding this situation. They did review it. After doing so ( and I want to publicly ackowledge it here for all fairness) the person involved, has sent me a PM apologizing and explaining their actions.

Regardless of whether or not he/she was instructed to PM is of no importance to me. He/She showed a level of maturity and accepttence in their second PM to me. Thank you for the apology, and know that I have accepted it.

Thank you for allowing me to vent on this whole situation. I have received numerous PM's, along with posts here that have really made me feel better about second guessing myself. I will continue to score and comment as I have been since joining.
