I'm sure everybody has heard now that Lindsay was part of a Marilyn Monroe recreation shoot for New York magazine, but I wanted to draw attention to one particular picture of her holding some lettuce in a strategic way.

(mildly not safe for work)
Lindsay Lohan as Marilyn

Is it just me or is that the worst B&W conversion you have ever seen? I realize Lindsay is freckled (and normally I find it quite attractive), but either the freckles are messing with the conversion or they left some tint to her skin that makes her look dreadful. I'm particularly talking about her face. There is no definition of her lips and perhaps the shadows of the wig are not doing her justice.

Anyway. I actually wondered if there were standard tips for dealing with freckles in B&W (and I'm talking lots of freckles, not just a few)...

oh crap that is terrible

in fact the whole shoot looks so plastic. Like she is trying too hard and that wig is so not helping matters. Even the wig can not pose, she doesnt have the right curves for a knock off of MM. Mind you I never knew her boobs where so big LL not MM

its pictures like these that give me hope to make millions in photography.

This shot is very unflattering. They did a horrible job. I usually love freckles, and in this case, I dont. She looks horrible and the hair is bad too. I dont like the pose either...did I say I dont like this shot? lol

Even I, who has no idea HOW to perform that conversion anyway, can see that it is poor!

Is it just me or does it appear that the whole shoot puts LL in a bad light? The wig is horrible. The posing is half-a**ed. The whole experience is horrible as a whole.

Oh... but I do like the bod beneath the crap. Oh yes, I do like the bod! :)> But still...where MM's photos are classy, LLs is mediocre. For her first intentional foray into nudity, I would much rather have seen her in Playboy. They know how to take the right pictures in a flattering way.

ETA: Oh darn... I typed too slow again. Everybody has chimed in with pretty much the same points as I. Guess i agree with everybody.

do you think they opted for that method to make it look like the original one from the 60s or whenever it was? I don't imagine they had CS3 back then.

I think the BW looks great.

and also it was shot by the same photographer

oy! that is horrid!

I don't mind the B&W conversion. My guess is they chose that processing technique specifically to retain and emphasize the freckles.

well, its not a generic and derivative B&W. It certainly highlights her freckles.

I don't personally find it particularly appealing, but then I don't find LL particularly appealing either.

At least they didn't just churn out the obvious B&W conversion, photoshop off her freckles or apply neat image turned up to 11

It's not the freckles so much as her face - it seems very pasty. It almost seems as though her face is on the wrong body.

I think the lips not being defined is a result of the frosted &/or white lipstick she's wearing. Kind of the 1960's mod look.

What do you mean, "deal with them"? I say just leave them be.

You can enhance them, or diminish them. Depends a lot on which channel you use for the conversion.
That's about it really, in essence. In this case they've gone for the enhancement sort of mix of channels.

i wonder if they almost ment to bring her look down and went for the 'beauty in imperfection' idea. if that was their stategy then id say they took it wwaayy past the extreme. these images are horrid.

Wow, those are really bad... all of them!
02/19/2008 07:55:52 PM · #22
My God, she looks diseased. Whomever was in charge of the final OK should be dismissed.
02/19/2008 08:04:06 PM · #23
That's what we call on my planet a Sh!tPhoto™ :)

Not only is it a dodgy conversion but everything about her looks more like that famous leaked Monroe post mortem/dead headshot than anything she did with the blood pumping. Seriously grim.

Plus, who was smoking what when they thought Lohan had any kind of resemblance to one of the greatest icons of the 20th century??!

Her body looks fine to me, right up to the jawline, but her face and hands look dead-grey. She doesn't have the Monroe lips, so the expression just isn't possible, but it's mostly the grey...?
The rest are better, if you ignore the cheap-looking lashes and wig but, again, not LL's fault. Hey, I guess there's hope for us to become famous and rich after all, eh?

After a bit of reading I understand this comment better. They were shot by the same photographer, Bert Stern, that shot the original images of Marilyn Monroe, 6 weeks before she died from an overdose. Shot in the same hotel as well as those original shots. Here's the accompanying article.

It's also interesting to note they were all shot on film, though they've obviously been altered - recoloured, or colour removed is maybe the interesting aside.
