In case all you Aperture users haven't heard, there is a new version released today!

All you D300 and D3 users, now you can open RAW, but, you have to pay for an upgrade for the new programme.

Sorry if this has already been posted, I couldn't find any reference to it.

Aperture 2.0 released

Pity it's not available in Europe yet!

ETA. It supports tethered shooting!

It also supports the Canon G9 and a number of other new cameras. The good news is that Apple dropped the price from $299 to $199.

I was gonna post this, too! But instead I will BUMP it :~)

I think I'll take the plunge now. Been trying to decide between Lightroom and Aperture. This new version looks pretty sweet.

BTW - OS X 10.5.2 was released yesterday. Big download (180 MB), but it's worth it.

And there are 2 new updates out today, one for iLife Support and the other for Leopard graphics.

Yes, took about 20 mins to update with 10.5.2 but FINALLY I can see my D300 Raw files in Quick look etc. Been a bit of a pain for the last 3 months.

$99 (upgrade); $9.95 (upgrade) for users who purchased this year.

I missed that $9.95 for those who bought this year!

I wonder if the performance enhancements will make it usable on my slightly out of date powerbook G4?? At least now it won't cost much to find out :-)

I'm really interested in some comparisons with lightroom -
The educator discount from Adobe is much better (99$ for lightroom $179$ for aperture) - but I really want to have a huge catalog of images which it looks like Aperture 2 might be better for that.

I like how you can order hardback books of your printed pics straight through the programme, that's a very cool addition. Good thinking, Steve Jobs.

Can't wait to have that in Lightroom

Better yet-- find someone who works for Adobe. I got my copy of Lightroom for $20, completely legit! Display box, jewel case, CD key, everything. :D

And Lightroom is pretty competent for large amounts of images (in my experience). There's a ton of little things you can flag images with that makes sorting through them a breeze. And if you find certain adjustments that make any image look great, you can batch apply it, which is nice too.

this is like shooting at a moving target right now...
- When Aperture first came out I compared with the then beta version of lightroom and Aperture was a clear winner.
- I thought Aperture and Lightroom 1.0 were almost even in capabilities, but Lightroom performed much better on my 15" powerbook and was much more usable on a laptop sized screen.
- With 1.5 Lightroom added some development features that maybe gave it as slight advantage (clearly debatable).
- With Aperture 2.0 we appear to get some of the great development features, better performance and better use of screen real estate.

I don't think either is clearly a better choice and the challenge is finding the time to really try each and see which you prefer.

I downloaded the demo of aperture. I have also used the demo of Lightroom whih chas since expired -
Surprisingly, the Apple product was slower and clunkier on my G5 imac - well maybe not too surprised - but disappointed anyway.
Lightroom's RAW functionality is also cleaner and more robust it seems. I can only imaging how great Lightroom 2 will be - this is one area Apple is behind IMO.

I heard Aperture 2 is fast, dramatically faster than 1.5.6 and ordered it (an upgrade for me). It should be here this week. If you like, I'll check in and file a little report.

Yes, please, Zeuszen. I'll watch this thread.

I purchased the update online and it is dramatically faster.

I'm using a powerbook G4 1.67Mhz (last one before switch to intel) and Aperture 1.5 was completely unusable on my system. Aperture 2.0 is quite usable and in some ways is exceeding the performance of Lightroom. The UI is also simpler and more affective. I'm not flipping from Lightroom back to Aperture (Lightroom trial was ending in two days anyway).

I'll be upgrading to Aperture 2 soon. I loved Aperture 1 but mostly stopped using it because it didn't have D3 support. I'd still do my D200 RAW work in it, but I hadn't been using the D200 all that much after I got the D3. (go figure right?) Aperture 1 got slow for me when I was using it for a long time, but if I kept it under a couple of hours I usually was fine, so the improved performance will be just an added bonus for me. I'm most happy that Aperture 2 supports camera tethering. I don't have my laptop yet, but this will keep me from having to shell out even more money for yet another program once I get one.

I received and installed Aperture 2.0.

After about an hour of use on an iMac 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB SDRAM/256MB VRAM running OS 10.5.2 (Leopard), with CS3/Bridge/Preview/Mail/Safari and iTunes open, I have to say this: Launching 1 sec.; rendering interface (windows and previews) 1 sec.; most adjustments are instant or nearly instant; (RAW) imports are as fast as they come (compared with ImageCapture - folder).

I'm still learning the program and exploring its features but love the new RAW encoder, particularly the way it manages (beyond just revealing them) blown highlights. I can also now switch between viewing modes without loosing any tools. It's a gorgeous interface, very snappy and responsive.

Sooner or later, I'm sure, I'll find something I don't like, but haven't found it yet.

Here's a prelim review by Macworld conducted with marginally slower hardware and less RAM than mine (above).

Apparently, this software demands more than my Apple that I bought just over a year ago can provide: G5 non-intel imac with 1GB of RAM. Lightroom was more intuitive and faster IMO.

I find I have to toggle less between modes with Aperture which allows me to edit on the fly. File management, too, is more intuitive (to me) than Lightroom's. I don't have Lightroom installed anymore but find Aperture considerably faster now.
1GB of RAM is a little sparse, perhaps, for either app as well as for CS3. I suggest to add a stick or two. ?

I guess it seemed amazing fast after having tried version 1.5. On my powerbook G4 navigation is quick and edits are reasonable as long as I tab through and enter the numbers rather than dragging the slider. My whimpy old system cannot handle adjusting as the slider moves, but I'll survive for a while longer.
