Bad lighting on one, I know. Critique the hell out of them. I need to learn how to take great portraits of little people.

I think the main thing to think about is finding a different background or dressing the baby in a different color. Using a darker background would help to separate both subject and background and focus your eyes on the baby.
Almost impossible to not have a baby look cute, but to make that cuteness really show you have to get those wonderful expressions to capture the person looking at the picture. Like when they laugh or smile, those are the best. It's one of the things that makes a great baby photo.

| I found out right after shooting these that she was in need of a diaper change. I thought she just wasn't in a smiley mood. |

Way too much going on in the background. I barely see the baby.
You need a solid background, so that my attention is on the subject.
A smile would be good too :) |

Here is just an idea....purchase a darker or lighter soild color flat fitted sheet, a cheep one. Iron out wrinkles for smoother appearance. Tack or tape to the wall
so that there is a bit of overflow on the floor. Pull the sheet away from the wall for a rounded effect, not to many wrinkles. Make sure baby's out fit is a constrasting color. Also make sure that the sheet is not too thin of material (light will show through from behide) Maybe prop baby on a stuffed pillow or animal ect. Then practice, practice, practice.
You could also put sheet higher on the wall and over flow onto a table,
but watch baby very carfully. |

Nice!
If you have a tripod, and a remote for the shutter -
One trick when photo'ing babies old enough to lift their heads... prop their upper body and arms up on a low riser covered with a blanket that blends well with the background you want to use (at home, a big dark colored wool jacket would work great for this, for example)...
Hold the baby's hands together in one of yours. Click the shutter just as you let go and dodge out of the way. This makes the baby follow your eyes, and hopefully toward the camera, while keeping them propped up on their hands. Then their hands are also closer together, and they look calmer than arms flailing out to the side.

| I have a tripod, but have yet to get a remote. I just got the camera last week. :) Thanks for the great tips. I plan on learning how to master this camera and get some great portraits. I hate spending a ton of money to have them done professionally. |

LOL ... now you'll spend a ton of your own money and time and make them professional :P
(I love doing it myself too... much more rewarding!) |
