Hey all,

I'm pretty new to submitting pictures to the site. I recently submitted this picture to the "Old Ways" challenge. //dpchallenge.com/challenge_stats.php?action=comments&IMAGE_ID=638898

Before submitting, I read through the basic editing rules and I thought I was following the rules but my submission was disqualified. The reason they gave me was "The use of effects filters (excluding Noise and Gaussian Blur) is not permitted in Basic Editing. This includes adding vignettes. Please review the challenge submission rules."

Here's what I did to the image. Please help me figure out what I did wrong so I do not duplicate my mistakes. I was to submit more pictures but I don't want to be disqualified again for something I did not understand.

All my changes were made in Adobe Lightroom, I did nothing in photoshop. All changes were made to the entire image, not parts. I did all my changes in RAW and then converted to a JPEG to submit the photo.

1. Increased the overall saturation a bit.
2. Lowered the saturation of certain colors to 0 and increased others until I got the dark brown look.
3. I used the "Clarity" tool which I believe increases sharpness and I set the clarity to 100.
4. Increased overall contrast using an S-Curve.
5. Increased the exposure.
6. Fixed the white balance.
7. Recovered some of the highlights by dragging the histogram to the left. I basically slid the recovery bar a bit to take the brightness out of the sky.
8. Very Slight crop, no rotation.
Thats it.

What did I do wrong? What tools from the above mentioned am I not allowed to use in a basic editing challenge? Thanks for any help with this, I would like to continue to submit photos but I don't want to get banished from the site for breaking the rules in the process.

no idea. everything you mentioned is legal.

This is something you should be asking the site council.

it would be helpful if you posted your entry along with a resized copy of your original. Sometimes it not the techniques, but the results.

How come the entry is no longer amongst your challenge entries?

Cause it is still in the voting stages.

Ah, it's in voting, I see... Hence no thumbnail either...

It is in a challenge that is still in voting.

There was a vignette effect added to your submission that was not present in the original.

The picture is still in the voting stage, which probably accounts for both the link not working and the fact that the photo has not appeared in the portfolio. Usually specific photos are not discussed until the voting is over, so perhaps we need to wait until Wednesday.
Edited to add: I need to type faster or be more concise.

Cant get to the image from your link. The only thing I can think of is step 5 and you increasing the exposure, did this 'remove' an element of the image?

I submitted the original photo to the site council and the response I got from them said that I shouldn't use effects filters which I didn't. I wanted to see if there was something simple in my process I did wrong that maybe someone could point out to me. Like "the Clarity tool isn't legal", or "you can't recover highlights". Maybe it's not that simple. I'm not trying to cause any issues I'm just trying to see what I did wrong so that I can avoid it in the future.

As Terry said previous...you added a vignette that wasn't in the original.

Wait 'till voting is finished, and then post your original unedited shot, side by side with your entry. We'll all have a look and talk it through then.

Ok thanks Strangeghost I appreciate it.

Gotta watch your settings in the RAW converters - they can be used to add vignettes which are not legal in basic. It does look like a PP vignette... perhaps the vignette setting was saved as a default setting - ie the program remembered what you had done from the last time.

FWIW, I looked over the image and original and it appears that a vignette was added, which is a selective change. That would be the reason it got DQ'd.

Even if the filter or effect is legal but using it results in a vignette or other "added feature" your entry will be DQd. My guess is that is what happened here. Won't know for sure until we see the original and the entry post challenge.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I figured out exactly what I did that was illegal. I had a preset in Lightroom that auto-used the Lens Vignetting tool. I like the look but I could have easily had just as good a picture without it. Well to live it to learn and that's why I'm here. Thanks again for all the comments,
Aaron

Arondee, I like your attitude. Instead of arguing or moaning about your DQ you simply asked, because you really wanted to learn. I'll think of you next time I'm tempted to grouse :)

I'll have to remember not to use my lightroom presets for basic editing challenges.
