I have just stopped voting on the Conflict challenge. I don't think I can continue. There are just so many images that in my opinion don't meet the challenge or are just bad examples of photography skill. For some reason it seems to me the the open challenges have become nothing more then Photosig or the likes where people upload any and everything that they may have captured. A shoehorn here and there is one thing, but submitting some of these shots that don't even come close to being 'conflict' and are poorly exposed images is just a waste. Where did the desire to submit good photographs go?

I couldn't agree more. Personally i did not enter because I could not come up with a good idea or photo. I enjoy voting and critiquing though cos it helps photographers and helps the critiquer. Will be interesting to see how votes go (there are a handful of credible entries).

Ditto. I didn't come up with anything either. I'm trying to practice a little restraint since my Texture submission did so poorly. I did however do a fire shot. Just had to get a fix.

I am 30% through the voting on Conflict, and it is really tough. This is an example, where we need to give folks the ability to pull their entry after 48 hrs. Once the majority of people realized their photos were so profound, only they got them, their would be only 10-15 photos to actually vote on.

I am still only about half way thru the Mundane entries and am getting the same feeling of poor quality & off-topic entries. I wiil persevere as I believe the only available solution is to vote the bad ones low and make comments where you can find something constructive to say.

As a still some-what noobi here I would have to say you guys are one tough freaking crowd to please. Your either bitching because no-one used imagination and did a "standard" shot or crying like girls because people tried to use imagination and or a shot that conveys the subject title.

I'm not really lashing out at you guys, but between my score, my comments I've recieved and the other posts I'm fed up.

I'm going to from now on shoot stupid, non-creative or simple shots that don't require thought in order to make a correlation between my image and the challenge...

I have not yet voted but I'm sure it because most of you.... Screw it, I'm not even gonna go there!

I am just learning photographer and I make lots of photo errors. I like this sight because of the honest criticism. It helps me learn what I should have done or what I should not done at all. Some of the comments though make me feel that this web site is only for the elite photographers, and us learners have no place. Which makes me debate spending $25 bucks for memembership.
I personally like looking at all photos good and bad. It's all a learniing process for me.

Sorry your having such a bad day. :(
You haven't been here long enough to have such an attitude. Look around there are lots of folks in boat with you. :)
It's hit and miss. Win some loose some. THE KEY TO GOOD TIMES did very well. Your work is good.
Tomorrow things will be better.

hey! why punish those who did take time to submit thoughtful shots? I worked hard on mine & while it is coming thru as a bit underexposed on some monitors & think I deserve your votes. Don;t give up! Keep at it & send comment to those who punked out & sent anything!

I implore you!

The problem with a challenge like 'conflict' is that the subject of the shoot is emotional. Since the theme is not a concrete and tangible one, there will be a lot less people that 'get' what you shoot. What I see in this challenge is not so much 'shoehorned' photos... no more than normal actually.

This is an 'open' challenge as far a subject is concerned. It's not 'open' in the fact that your photo must convey a specific emotion. It is tough to wade through a lot of photos where you/I don't understand the photographer's intent, when there is supposed to be a specific one. Those photos don't 'meet' the challenge.

I don't like voting on the challenge topic particularly, but I do it because the rules say I should. I would LOVE to get back to my old way of voting on the photo. A photo is so much more enjoyable to me when I'm not asked to look for something specific within the image. I like to let the image talk to me rather than ask the image for information. This is somewhat impossible in a topical challenge. I had hoped that the monthly 'open' challenge would continue for this very reason. I think the problem there is that DPChallenge is just that.. it's a 'challenge' and not an open photography contest.

I vote on every photo in every challenge. I REALLY like an average of about 5% of the photos that show up here. About 15-20% of the images are good images that don't speak at all. The remaining images are rather useless to me for learning or exploration.

I find inspiration moreso in the truly open challenges. I am able to see what the photographer is interested in. The images, as a whole, have some voice and are not mute.

I like this idea too, as it would help reduce the total number of pics. It is tough to get through the sheer number of photos...let alone make a thoughtfull comment.
(especially when a lot of the shots are off-topic or poorly executed).

On another related topic - I get frustrated with negative comments from folks that seldom enter any shots of thier own... or thier shots are not so great.

I have come to realize that this site is more about pictures with "pizzazz" rather than just a quality shot on topic. If you can get the combination right... a shot that jumps out at the viewer in the first 2 seconds of scannng... you will likely score higher. So far I have only found the combination once...

I used to think this too. I am glad I got over it though.

yeah.. i do agree that this challenge i dished out an unordinary large amount of low marks..

on the same note... i think my image is doing worse that it should... or than i thought it would. the image is fine i think, but people don't realize the conflict. it isn't an anger, harsh conflict, it is a two things apposing eachother conflict...

so perhaps in addition to lots of poor images, there is also lots of missunderstanding.

I guess I don't get all the angst. I'm a noobie, too, but for heaven's sake -- it's just a photo challenge! If you don't want to "risk" getting all kinds of feedback (clear and confusing, good and bad, pros and cons), don't post a picture. If you don't want to see all kinds of photos (those that pop, those that meet the challenge, those that embrace the word average -- as mine is doing in a current challenge -- and those that redefine the word abysmal), don't vote. It's really pretty simple.

i have voted on and viewed every image in the challenge conflict,
and read all the comments.
I have drawn the conclusion that
as bad or good as any image was, one thing is certain,
though emotion may not have been conveyed from the image directly.
I have seen widest range of emotion and conflict in the opinions.
Thumbs up to all who participated
a complete success

Imason: Sorry for my ignorance, but how do you view the comments of an ongoing challenge?
02/26/2004 08:58:54 PM · #21
As 'Conflict' is such a big theme, I was rather hoping for some strong conceptual work here that touched the big metaphors. I am quite puzzled that the entries are so weak. Other comps have been very much better. I work in the commercial world where compliance with the brief is simply the starting point, and where an image usually needs to communicate without a title or embedded textual hints to explain it. To me relevance to the theme, novel concepts and execution are actually more worthy than technical proficiency. In other words, it is the thinking behind a shot that is most interesting. Much as I would like to encourage all the entrants, it must be better to score from a fairly stringent standard. No one learns much from being patted on the back. Hence there are number of common devices that I generally give low scores, such as: pictures of sculpture (someone else's idea), pets, propaganda, obviously staged shots and shots set up with games, toys and stuffed animals. Harsh?

Under my preferences, which is found under my home there is an open on the right hand side to hide signatures. I believe it is defaulted off so you'll have to tick the box and it will stop you from seeing all signature of all people in the forums.
