Im guessing a vase or glass will usually work nicely. For this shot I used a carpenters clamp to hold up the flower as it got detached from it's stem while shooting it.

I usually tape them to the edge of the vase to get the position I want like these two flowers.

Same here, I use masking tape to hold them in position to the vase.

go to a craft or hobby shop and pick up a block of green flower foam - it is what they use to hold flowers in displays - you can position the flower in any way you want. A block that is about the size of a brick will run about $2

HI,
Thanks for the compliment

This is an amarylis that stands on it's own! really, not tricks no slight of hand, no standing on it's head. It's a tall stalk.

The black background is a dark red cloth, and the flower was positioned about 2 feet from it. ( I do this with black cloth also)
This was a "painted with light" shot, I used a small hand held flashlight (torch) to illuminate the front and was bouncing a small halogen desk lamp off the white ceiling for fill light.

You can go to a craft store and buy some small gage wire. It's what florists use to make wedding bouquets usually, wire and florists tape.

I won't go into the details of wiring a flower (nor will I ever admit where and why I learned how to do it ;o)) but a quick easy way is to insert the wire in the stem from the bottom. That way you can bend any way you like.

Good trick for tulips and the likes.

Hope it helped...
Happy shooting!

This is what I use also.

I put a block of green flower foam in a plastic bowl that they use in the floral arrangements.

I have also used just plain styrofoam packing.
