Recently Ive been wanting to get a simple point and shoot for those nights at a party or out with some friends when I don't want the weight of my slr.

I have been looking at the Canon SD 1000, SD750 the Olympus 790 SW and today the Nikon Coolpix P5100 was brought to my attention as a good possiblity.

Can you recommend one that is compact and has good picture quality please.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I can't speak for any of the camera's you've been looking at, but I know I was very happy with my Kodak Z740.

Canon PowerShot Pro Series S5 IS 8.0MP Digital Camera with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

One of the best P&S out there :)

i know that fuji produces the best quality sensors for p&s's.
for example the f20/f30 have the lowest noise level of all tested p&s's, they're "only" 6mp, but that's enough for most of all situations. and they're very reasonably priced by now...

I just bought a Canon G9 for those times when I didn't want to bring my 30D with me. It's not tiny, but it's not huge, either. And it has a full set of manual features and shoots RAW. Also has a hotshoe, which was a major point for me. Could be that it's more than you need for what you want to use it for, but on the other hand, it's really nice to have an alternative to a DSLR that maintains the features you love. Worth a look at least.

I have the Canon SD1000 and I love it. I didn't want anything with manual controls because it was supposed to be a just for fun camera. I do like it though, but I'm thinking about getting the Olympus SW because it's waterproof. Can't go wrong with either.

I really love my Fuji F20 - it takes almost as good of pictures as an SLR (REALLY) - I use it for most of my day to day pictures of family events and quick photo opportunities. You can use up to ISO 800 with super low noise and ISO 1600 is very useable. Almost all the pictures in my galleries over at PBase are taken with this camera:

My PBase Galleries

You will see many indoor shots without flash there.

Sometimes, the Fuji F20 is a bit hard to find. I think you can still get them on eBay and Amazon. I got one for my Mom for Christmas and she loves hers, too.

The Fuji F40 and F50 are almost as good in low light. It is a small camera and is very well made and sturdy. I can slip it into my pocket or purse and take it everywhere.

I bought an Olympus 790SW for my two little grandsons to use when they are with me and it takes nice pictures but no where near as nice as the Fuji F20.

I know if I had the money to drop on a P&S, I would most certainly go with a waterproof model. Being able to take pictures underwater is something my D70s cannot accomplish without a $1000 enclosure.

I think I'll choose the Nikon

Just to throw something new into the mix (in case it's not confusing enough already),
I was very impressed with the shots my sis took in Thailand with her new Panasonic Lumix. Sorry, I don't know what model it was, but it was one of the smaller ones.

The unedited shots were amazing in sharpness and colour quality; the best I've seen straight from the camera.

Agree about the panasonic part, I used one panasonic for one day. And was amazed with colour quality. Definitely the best I have also seen straight from camera.

Pentax, Hands down! This is rumor, and I'm not sure if its real, but I tend to believe it, because of the clarity I get out of my 4mp.

I heard Pentax uses Leica lens in alot of their P and S cameras, and they are contracted with Leica. I don't know if thats real, but even if its not they also have selective desaturation modes that they pioneered standard on alot of their P and S cameras...I would also recommend that function...its alot of fun, hehehe!

I'm voting Pentax in the P and S category, and I think its by a long shot. No other that I've seen that I like more. Very durable creatures too. No good zoom, on mine.

I've stood it next to, Fuji Finepix, canon A70, and a 10mp Panasonic...and it is only my opinion that the Pentax blew them away.

I've been drooling over the new Powershot G9 I think it is - 12mpix and RAW...but not cheap - about 400 GBP (800-850 USD maybe)

I also got a Canon G9 for when toting the dslr is not practical--I really like it, and it has a full set of controls, manual, raw, face detection, and lots to play with. It is not really a "pocket" camera, though, so if that is a factor you would want to get your hands on one and see if it "fits"

I am intrigued by the comments below on the Panasonic Lumix cameras, though.

I bought the Canon A650 IS as a PS to carry when I don't want to lug the D200. I was pretty much swayed by the rotaing screen feature but I'm sorry I did not go for the G9 and it's RAW capability.
