Hey guys. I have our camera club's print of the year competition tonight. I can enter 3 prints that I have previously entered in a competition. I know what 2 of them are but I've got a choice of 3 for the last print to use. For starters, these are the ones I'm using.

These are the 3 I'm choosing between for the 3rd slot.

The 3rd one I don't have a large print of, but I have large prints of all the others. I do have it ready in case there is an overwhelming majority that think I should enter it. So if you have a few minutes to check out the pics, I'd appreciate your input.

Thanks a million!

You have a great selection for your contest.
If I were you, I would take the spider: the transparency of the legs is awesome.
I actually do prefer the side view on the bridge though: I do like the reflections in the water very much.
Let us know about the outcome.

Added: the RR Bridge-image seems to be titled to the left a bit (0.1° or so).

I'd go with the spider.

But then I'd also take away the paperclips, and put in the bridge.

I`d go with the 2 bridge ones and the paper clips.

I like the bridge. The spider, although nice has a little bit of "flaw" (spider web or scratch on glass, perhaps?) that some people may not like and affect your score.

I'll add this little tidbit in. The scores I received on these pictures the first time around - The scoring is on a 3 judge panel with 5 points per judge, 15 being the highest. The 2 that I've already decided to use were rated 14's. The side bridge shot that I used for DPC was a 13, the lily picture was a 10 (which still stuns/stings me to this day) and the spider picture was 14. Granted our judges for this last competition are outside judges. The lily picture is my personal favorite of the 3 I have to choose from. BUT I definitely value all of your opinions here because even if its my favorite, is it the best shot to put in? I might like it a little extra just because its the first flower shot I've taken that I really like. This is my quandry... And thanks everyone who has replied so far and thanks in advance for the other replies I'll hopefully be getting.

This is a tough choice! While I like all three, my pick is the lily photo. I love lillies (I have several photoes on dpc prints and am teased by my family about taking too many pictures of them). This is probably the best photo of a lily i have seen - the colors are incredible and the way you captured the texture of the lily is quite amazing. Obviously I am partial to the lily! However, I also really like the spider picture, but just like i may be partial to the lily, others may be put off by a spider picture just because of the subject, no matter how fair they are trying to be - human nature. I could be wrong on that but I would at least consider that possibility. Anyway, good luck in your competition - please update us on how it went!

Hi Bob,... great photos! I can feel your dilemma.

Tough choice between the flower and the spider, but I'd choose the spider...it is unusual.

I like the spider shot the best for originality, composition and DOF.

I vote for the spider because it shows a different aspect of your skills. The depth and clarity is really outstanding. For a picture of something so commonly taken, yours is interesting and very different than what most people have captured. I love that perfect circle of sun in the background. If it's allowed, maybe clone out the faded part of the web to the right.
I'd replace the tracks with the bridge.

Okay, I think I have 5 for the spider, only 1 for the lily and 3 for the bridge. I ordered the spider print and can get it this afternoon. I thought that might be a problem, but 3 hours is enough notice to get it printed the same day. Now I just need to decide on a mat board color for the spider picture. I'm thinking of just using a pale yellow with it so it matches the print. Any thoughts on mat board color choices? My colorblindness here can be a huge problem trying to match colors.

Thanks - Bob

i would use a black matte for the spider - matching the silhouette - and the BG elements - but i am a black matte junky too..

good luck

The shop where I have my pictures framed suggested that for competitions, always use a black or white mat. She said that judges just want to concentrate on the picture but if I want one for the home, I could go with whatever I liked. I respect her opinion.
Good luck with your entries.

I'm also a black matte junky. The other 2 pictures I'm using are going in black mats already. I'd like to have a little different color for that one. If not, black is easy since I already have a couple sheets of it

That spider pic rocks :)

I really like the lily! It is so vibrant and clear. I would also say that I like the side view of the bridge better than the one of the RR straight on. They are all gorgeous, but the bridge, paperclips and lily are my faves! :) Just my opinion.

Follow up after the competition

Well everything went according to the script of an after-school special. Many pictures went by for the first half that were no different than what we see every competition. I don't think they were "Print of the Year" material really. But there were a couple 14 (out of 15) but no 15's. Then I got a 15 with the side view of the bridge. Then this other lady named Linda got 15. A few more went by, I got another 15 for the other bridge picture, then she got another 15 on the last picture. The judges had 4 to choose from. They pulled one of hers out. I had 2 of the top 3 pics for the year AND I STILL DIDN'T WIN!!!!!!! Oh well, there's always next year.

I ran out of time matting the pictures I had. Since the side view of the bridge one was already matted, I went with that one. I did get the spider picture blown up and it looks great. If I had time I would've entered it. One of the judges told me I made it hard to focus on one of the IR pics because I had 2 of them there and that he would've rather seen only one. I showed him the spider picture and he thought that might be there in place of one of the bridge shots anyway. Live and learn I reckon.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and support. You guys rock!
Bob
