Please note that we've made a few tweaks to remove the confusing Time-Lapse allowance from the Advanced Editing rules for now, although they can still be used for the January Free Study since it was announced before this change.

Latest rules: Advanced Editing Rules (Jan 14th)

Older rules (still applicable for Free Study 2008-01): Advanced Editing VI ("Time Lapse").

Hehehehe...I can just imagine the Site Council behind the scenes....Scalvert...looking like the cat dragged him in....Karmat about to take up drinking...Ursula...sitting in the corner plucking petals off flowers, staring into nothingness.

Yup...me tinks SC had been twisted and pulled in all directions on this one...lmao!!

Note-...this post is said in good faith and humour....but I will still start running right about now...just to be safe...hehehehe!!

Probably an oversight. Advanced is still 720px as far as I know.

I just looked, and it's still there.

"at least 160 pixels, and no more than 720 pixels on each side."

What were the changes? Do I have to actually go and look at the rules page????
01/14/2008 12:22:35 AM · #7
It's 640px/150kb in the rules summary posted with the challenge description, in contradition to the posted rule set. It is almost certainly a mistake where some template code was not updated or something.

Basically, I think Time-Lapse and Textures were removed as uses of multiple files -- multiple files are meant to be used to improve the scene technically, as in HDR processing, noise-reduction, improving DOF, etc., and not to create special effects li8ke multiple iterations of the subject.

P.S. Yes, you do need to go read the rules page. You are attesting that you have done so when you check off the boxes while entering your submission.

Uh Oh I always just put my hand on an old copy of "Joy of Photography" when I clicked the submit button....

I was about to reach for the Jim Beam when I rechecked the rules and saw 640. It seems to me that the checkbox on the "submit" page was ok for 720 wide.

A link for those who may find it helpful for the new Rules:

Challenge Rules - Advanced Editing (Jan 13th)

And the complete list of all Challenge Rules:

Challenge Rules

-----------------

I am confused why Expert Editing is/was not used for Challenges such as Landscape, Time Lapse, etc. That would have sufficed for challenges where HDR, or deliberate styles of multiple images were required or desired. Why the Advanced Rules had to be modified to accommodate editing that was already allowed under Expert Editing is unclear, especially with all the resulting issues. At least that was not open to (mis)interpretations. The 'freedom' in Expert Editing doesn't have to be used to create 'digital art', it could be used for specific themed Challenges, with or without 'Extra Rules'.

I don't know whether this would be a good idea or not, but given the 'trial nature' of the Time Lapse Challenge, perhaps any obvious misinterpretations should have their DQ waivered in this instance.

For what it is worth, I thought it was a good Challenge to have. Produced some interesting images and, of importance, presumably taught many about capturing, combining and editing multiple exposures, including how difficult it is to do.

----------------

And a side note, after scanning the Advanced Rules, unless I missed the announcement, appears this part changed unannounced:

Challenge Rules - Advanced Editing IV
Image Modification and Content Rules
Nudity. Nudity is an acceptable form of art on this site. Photographs may not, however, show male or female genitalia or any acts of sex. Nudity should be presented in a tasteful manner."

Challenge Rules - Advanced Editing (Jan 13th)
Requirements
"You may not:
submit a photograph depicting male or female genitalia, or acts of sex deemed inappropriate by a majority of the Site Council."

These rules should also be consistent with the TOS, which state:

Registered User's Agreement / TOS
"4.2 You will not use the DPChallenge.com Service to post content or to design, manufacture, market or sell a Product that (i) infringes the rights of a third party, including, without limitation, copyrights, trademarks, patents, trade secrets, rights of privacy and publicity, (ii) is libelous, defamatory or slanderous, (iii) condones, promotes, contains or links to warez, cracks, hacks or similar utilities or programs, (iv) contains explicitly sexual content, (v) does or may denigrate or offend any ethnic, racial, gender, religious or other protected group, through use of language, images, stereotypical depiction or otherwise, (vi) is designed to or does harass, threaten, defame or abuse others, (vii) exploits images or the likeness of minors, (viii) encourages the use of drugs or the under-age use of alcohol or cigarettes or (ix) is generally offensive or in bad taste."

Some people read Site Rules as part of their decision making process of whether the site is right for them. It is a good way to form an opinion of the general 'flavor' of the site, what is and isn't acceptable, content posted on it, etc. If any of those rules (ethics) change, these too should be announced for attention. edit:fixed link & edit2:to add the TOS quote

The HDR rule should be removed as well. It is not a fair competition to allow a few types of photography (mainly already overated landscapes) to use ten photos, and the rest to use one. This rule change does not resolve all issues. What about moving people in a square? What about a moving bird in a landscape? You can pick through and use a whole huge pallate of dynamic range for a landscape, but you can't blacken out or whiten out a background that you don't want, even if it is in one of your 10 photos. How is that fair? What I'm interested in is fairness. You should fix the expert rules and allow HDR there. That levels the playing field, allowing other pieces of digital art to compete.

I think it sucks the advanced editing rules have changed to allow multiple images. I don't understand why? I never entered any of the expert editing because of that reason which was fine because I still had Advanced editing to enter. I won't be renewing my memership. I just don't see the point

HDR is not the same as wide-open Expert Editing digitial art/collage imagery and IMO should not be limited to Expert Editing events. I'm glad the Advanced Rules were modified to allow the use of HDR. However, that said, I think the 10 image maximum is a little high...perhaps 3 would be more controlled.

That 'freedom' is expected to be used in most cases with an Expert Editing ruleset. Most non-digital art type work will get lost in the fantasy world.

I'm glad the Expert Editing ruleset is fading away...

Hate to see you leave over this. Just because it's allowed doesn't mean everyone's gonna do it. I'm sure there will be a lot of experimentation for a while, but it's sure to pass. And there are a lot of people who feel that only 1 capture should be used.

The multiple images are allowed for HDR, which is combining multiple exposures of the same scene. And it's just an additional option and only works on certain types of shots.

It's only multiple images of a single scene (like processing two different exposures of the same RAW capture)... nowhere near Expert editing.
