One of my favorite subjects. So much, in fact, that I just took some great shots of one before the challenge was announced!

I'll find more I guess...

BTW, how does one define a "building?"

LOL not worried about what is or is not a building just waiting for the first "I was out shooting for the abandoned building and I got arrested for trespassing" post to hit the message board. :)

Oh, I love those stories!

I guess it's time to go exploring town again - I love a good excuse! (And hate the color yellow)

Oh no, there's a gorgeous abandoned building I've been meaning to photograph but my car is off the road and I don't think I can get there :( Maybe there's another one closer to home.

What if the abandoned building has squatters living it is it still abandoned? Hehehe I just had to ask.

I had a security guy come by when I was shooting. I think he was afraid I was going to vandalize something, or try to go where I was clearly not supposed to go. The first time he drove by and asked how I was doing; the second time he just drove by to make sure I knew he was still watching me. I dunno'; maybe at my age I should be flattered someone thinks I'm daring enough to get in trouble!

I went back to the abandoned building I shot last week, and didn't get results even close to the originals... I'll be looking around for more, but it's hard to find abandoned buildings in the middle of suburban sprawl.

I don't suppose there are any Londoners here who know how to get into the old tube station beneath the Old Bull and Bush pub in Hampstead? I've googled extensively but there are all kinds of differing views and none recently.

I've always wanted to shoot it and this challenge is ideal...otherwise it'll be me cruising the North Circular looking for a warehouse or something to shoot (considerably less interesting or fun)..

Cheers

I'm spoiled for choice here in Texas! Something rural would be great for this, but I will not have the time to drive around. Actually, my abandoned building of choice was torn down about a month ago, or I would be using it:

FWIW Steve it's probably a good thing that you didn't submit that - not because it's not a good photo, but because it doesn't convey 'abandoned' enough and I reckon you'd get crucified by the DNMC crowd. That said I'm still dumbfounded by some voting practices.

Well, I guarantee it is (was) abandoned. Vines growing all over it and lots of caterpillars everywhere. I'm glad I got some photos before it was torn down. My Macro entry last year was also taken at this location:

If you mean WB (white balance), that is something that is certainly allowed and legal for this challenge.

I think he means a cross-processed look. I think that might be within editing rules. Just be careful how you do it so that it stays within rules.

Could have been that the officer was trying to be sure you were ok. Woman... alone....at an abandoned building... my best friend is a cop and coferring with her she says she would make sure anyone alone ina secluded spot - especially a woman alone - hadn't been attacked. If your car was still there but you wernt she would have gone looking to be sure you hadn't been attacked. Not all police officers are out to intimidate photographers, he may have just been looking out for you. :)

forgive the typos I'm on a crackberry at the doctors office. lol

I'm fairly new to submitting photos to challenges here(although I've been lurking for about a year now :-) )
Now I'm not so sure about these basic editing rules, am I allowed to change the colours in the shot(using sauration in colorize mode) an use the adjustment layer in normal mode but with another opacity then 100% or has it to be 100%? sorry if this question is stupid but i couldnt get a real answer by reading the editing rules...As i'm understanding them I could use any adjustment layer but in normal mode...does this mean opacity on 100%?
another question would be: am I allowed to use the shadow highlight adjustment (it's not an adjustment layer so I'm a bit confues. wouldnt want my picture being disqualified )

Since no one has answered you, I'm going to try...

In basic mode, the main idea is that if what you do affects the whole picture, then it's usually allowed. If it only affects some pixels, then it's not allowed. For example, you could increase the contrast - on the whole photo. You could also adjust the saturation (of all colors or just one), as long as you do it for all the pixels in the shot. Someone once showed me how you could make it look like selective desat, but you can't really do "selective" anything.

I hope that makes sense.

If you're there, is it really abandoned? ;-P
