Time to sign up for the January Walkabout – January 18-21, 2007

Time for the January Walkabout. I skipped December due to the holidays, and have been lazy in getting the next one started, but dsray just reminded me to get it going, so here we go. I added a couple days on either side of the weekend this month, to accommodate those with weekend work schedules.

As always, the idea is to improve our ability to see an image by forcing us to focus on, and see the beauty in, the mundane and ordinary ... or at least what we often perceive as the mundane and ordinary part of everyday life. Sometimes beauty can be found in the ordinary places or objects we walk by every day without a second glance; other times it can be in a beautiful place discovered at the end of a path we've walked by but never taken the time to walk down before.

The process is simple: Get a whole bunch of people to take their cameras out on the same weekend, walk somewhere familiar to them, and see what kind of images we come up with. Walk with your eyes wide open -- The journey is the destination.

Here's the rules:

1. The challenge starts from a place that is familiar to you, and that you regularly visit during a normal week. You may not travel to any special location for the shoot. Good starting places would be your home, your work, your school, or the grocery store where you regularly shop. The idea is to start from a familiar location which you wouldn’t ordinarily think of as a place to go take pictures. Even unfamiliar places can sometimes be a good place for a walkabout. Feel free to start from anyplace that you wouldn’t ordinarily think of as a great location for a photo shoot, and keep your eye out for the ordinary, and see if you find something extraordinary.

2. You must leave your starting place on foot. No other mode of travel is permitted. To preserve the serendipitous nature of this challenge, pictures should not be taken at your starting location, but should be taken somewhere off the premises.

3. Your picture must be taken between 12:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. (local time) on a single day during the challenge period, January 18-21.

4. Advanced editing rules apply. Or not. You decide. The focus should be on the image not the processing, but if you want to layer on a texture you found on your walkabout, or share a triptych of similar subjects, go for it. It’s your challenge!

Optional Rules

Treasure Hunt – Naturally Framed
Take a photo and use objects in the foreground or background to frame your main
element(s).
As suggested by jaxter, the winner of the November Walkabout. He'll pick the winner of this month's Treasure Hunt, who then gets to pick the treasure for the next walkabout.

November’s Personal Challenge – Down on Your Knees
As we walk around, most of see the world from five or six feet above the ground. It's amazing what a small change in that perspective can accomplish in turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. This month, as you are on your walkabout, try to take some pictures from your knees, or even lying down on the ground. Share what you find in your posts!

Posting & Commenting
Images should be uploaded to the January Walkabout Posting Thread, which will be created the day before the challenge starts.

You should post no more than five images. All images should be uploaded in a single post.

Try to include a little narrative in your post, telling us where you went, what you did, and how or why you found the images you did.

Please try to comment on as many images you can the following week (Jan. 22-26). Commenting on this challenge is as much fun as participating.

After all the entries are in, feel free to post your favorites in the Walkabout Hall of Fame thread!

Sign up in this thread if you're interested!

Anyone can play! Posting is a little more difficult since you don't have a DPC portfolio to post to, but the real challenge is in what you find on your walk. We'd love to have you come join us.

... sort of, ...if I see the sun, ...if it is above 0 degrees F, ...what are the chances of both at once?... Minneapolis in winter... bringing me down.
I'm in.

Edited for stupid typo.

Great idea, count me in to! :)

I vote for Advanced editing, layers come in pretty useful in such circumstances.
