It's time to begin putting together the 3rd Annual Redrock GTG to be held in the redrock country of southern Utah. In 2006, we stayed in Moab and photographed part of Arches NP, part of Canyonlands NP and area. In 2006, we headed to Paige, Arizona and photographed Antelope Canyon, Lake Powell, Hoodoos and the Wave.

The decision is madeon this year's destination: Begin at Capitol Reef and travel to Moab with something like this for the itinerary:
Thurs, Apr. 17 - Leave in AM and arrive in Torrey about lunch, check in and photograph Capitol Gorge, Sun Point and other nearby area.
Friday, Apr. 18 - Photograph Capitol Reef area throughout day. Possible shoot with models (or good looking photogs ;-) ) in the environment. There's horseback riding nearby that took us up in the hills between the Henry Mountains and the redrock. Great shots, but hard on the move. Rest mid-day and out again at late afternoon to dark. Arrange for early check out.
Saturday, April 19 - Up and check out before dawn. Head east, stopping at Factory Butte for sunrise shots and area, moving on to Goblin Valley with the morning light, and spending the remainder of the day exploring Little Wild Horse/Bell Canyon (Slot Canyons) or go to The Great Gallery (top notch pictographs). Head to Moab to stay at the Inca Inn (for $54.95 + tax/night). Possible evening shoot.
Sunday, April 20 - Shoot in Arches, Canyonlands and Dead Horse Point
Monday, April 21 - More Arches, Canyonlands or even outside of Moab in La Sal/Monticello
Tuesday, Early morning shoot/ slickrock/ river area. Checkout and head home.

Interested:
Nald, dsidwell, LanceW Some, dacrazyrn, PSUlion01 Zeuss and SkylerCall maybe.

Reservations made: nikolai1024, yakatme maybe, dwterry maybe, jbsmithana and son, rjkstesch and hubby, Agaricus, and Chad Smith and wife

Wowwy - Zowwy! We have an inexpensive place to stay in Torrey, Utah, for our Capitol Reef leg of our GTG

We'll be staying at the Capitol Reef Inn & Cafe in Torrey. It is an older, small, motel with well rated food at the cafe and very nice reviews on the rooms. The rooms go for $44/night + taxes for 1 person, and $48/night + taxes for 2 people. Most rooms have 2 beds.

They have only 10 rooms and are holding them for us until the end of January. Make your reservation on the web site under Motel, and then Motel Rooms. You need to give a credit card number, but it will not be charged until the day of check in. We will be staying at the Capitol Reef Inn & Cafe in Torrey on April 17 & 18.

We have a place to stay in Moab for a very reasonable price($54.95/night + tax) (and with good reviews). It's the Inca Inn. We have 10 rooms being held for us until the end of January. After that, you're on your own. Use the registration form on the web site (no one is at the Inn right now), and include that you are with the Tesch group on April 19 - 22. You'll have to give a credit card number, but it is not charged unless you do a no show.

So, make your reservations for Moab and Torrey, right now(even if you're not sure you can go)! Cancelling is much easier than getting reservations later on.

Great! As of now it looks like I can make this one! I was so disappointed that I could not attend the last two years.

I'd be up for the last choice, Bryce and Zion, but would not complain about any of them. I passed through Zion and stayed at Bryce one night and I would love to spend some quality time in each. BTW -there is fairly reasonable logging at the entrance to Bryce and of course camping in the area (Ruby's Inn). Same for Zion I believe.

In any case count me in and thanks for taking this on again Rebecca.

I'd love to join the party here, but we're actually planning to head out there later in the summer (July). I wanted to ask a quick favor of anyone who does go who happens to have a GPS. Would you mind marking a few of the best spots for photography and sharing the coordinates here? If anyone has waypoints from the last trip, I'd certainly be interested in those, too (like Horseshoe Canyon). Many thanks!

I'd sure like to get any of the coordinates from past trips also as I plan to make this a more extended trip and visit some of the hot spots of past trips. I'll also try to save a few from this trip (assuming I make it and find some!) and post them.

Alan, That is going to be a VERY warm trip in July. Expect temps up to 110 degrees in most areas. Bryce and Cedar Breaks would be very nice with decent temp.

We'll have to take GPS coordinates on this trip. PhantomEWO had a GPS on the 1st trip and may have some locations coordinates.

I vote for Moab again. I don't think we have explored Arches as much as we should have and I bet Canyonlands have much to explore as well.

If not my second choice would be anything close to Vegas so I could stay there for a day or two.

Yeah, but we'll be balancing it out with a visit to the top of Pike's Peak :) Seriously, we're not all that bothered by heat. We've done Mexico in the summer, too.

I think that we'll probably sit this one out...at least this year. Too many trips coming up this spring and summer, plus I plan on teying to put together a Tetons/Yellowstone GTG in late September. I have never gotten up there for fall colors, and this year I plan on remeding that fact. You guys have fun, though. Red Rocks was a blast last year, and I can't image that this year will be any different.

We'll miss you, Eric. I just may be able to make it to the Teton/Yellowstone gig. It's gorgeous that time of year, and a wonderful drive up from Salt Lake.

Hey Becky!

Got your PM thanks for checking in! I'm pretty sure I can make it but I don't know if I can go for the entire time. I would vote for Moab myself; there are so many great locations in and around there that we really can't go wrong. We could also make a run out (up) to Grand Staircase Escalante for a change as well.

Anyway JM2C, talk to you soon!

Steve

Thanks to Becky again for helping to organize this! Capitol Reef is one of my favorite places in the whole world. That would get my vote.

Hey Becky, I hope that I can make it on those dates. I know that I could do the first week in April for sure but I don't have any help these days with getting my son to and from school. He's out for spring break the first week in April and could visit his mother or grandmother then but it's back to routine after that.

I'll see what I can work out though because I'd love to go to any of those places. I wouldn't mind doing Page again and hitting some of the same places that we did last year and the other choices would be fine with me too. I've been to Zion but have not really explored it much.

Capitol Reef is very cool //flickr.com/photos/digitalknight/1588481351/- and Torrey has a couple of great little restaurants that I really enjoy too. Great food -

I found a highway south of Blanding, about a two hour drive south of Moab (on the Moab side of the choice) called the Bicentennial Highway. There are places there where in the golden hours it nearly takes your breath away - there's some little National Park down that highway too with lots of fun little hikes.

Monticello is about a hour south of Monticello, and there's Horsehead Mountain just to the west of it. That mountain is full of all kinds of wildlife, much of which you can just pull up in your car and photograph //flickr.com/photos/digitalknight/1588482415/ //flickr.com/photos/digitalknight/577439232/(deer, bear, elk, wild turkey, coyote, etc.). Foy lake at the top of that mountain road overlooks Canyonlands from the dam, and there's a four wheel road that goes up and over the mountain to Blanding for a spectacular drive. (this if you get bored of red rock) You can take a new highway down off the mountain right into Canyonlands now...

There's also a great little town called Lasal about 20 minutes south of Moab with great textured old buildings link. This //flickr.com/photos/digitalknight/780392701/ is about an hour past Lasal...

Don't forget Looking Glass Rock which is an arch just off the highway after the Lasal turn off. It's a dirt road that my PT Cruiser handled just fine all the way to the arch. //flickr.com/photos/digitalknight/2065303470/

As you approach Monticello there's a turn off marked "Anticline Overlook" - amazing views to be had there - and some fun four wheel drive trails to get you to places like this linklinky

Anyway, for info on indian ruins that only the "locals" know about or other stuff let me know and I can get you maps or GPS coordinates maybe...

There's so much down there that isn't on "the map" - I'm a big fan can you tell?

Well if the timing isn't almost perfect. I have a big show in Las Vegas (show runs the 14-18th) and could come up after perhaps joining the party on the 19th. Bryce and Zion sound great, but can probably make it to any location by the 19th.

I'll mark the calendar, first week of April maybe a bit tight, but not impossible. Capitol Reef would be a great place, and the last time I was there it was raining :-( It's not to far from Escalante which offers nice slot canyon hikes (OK not as nice as Antelope), but some can be kind of long.

Capitol Reef offers
Panorama Point
Pectol's Pyramid
Cathedral Valley
Bentonite Hills
Waterpocket Fold

The list goes on....and none that I have good pictures of.

Depending on how you went down, Goblin Valley and The Great Gallery could also be a stop.

Becky, thanks also for the PM. I'd love to do it, but I needed to find out how that will jive with my finals schedule. Westminster ends spring semester REALLY early. It's usually the last week of April and a couple days into May. But I don't have classes Fridays, so maybe I can look at leaving Thursday night/Friday morning. Then just stay for the weekend. Capitol Reef sounds most appealing to me, but I think all those locations would be fantastic.

I took some time today during lunch to look at what you've been posting. With a weighted scale (more points for stronger interest) I looked at the options. Page, Ariz. and area was knocked out, and Capitol Reef was slightly ahead of Moab and Bryce/Zions. Looking at the map and some of the suggestions, I came up with another option, both Capitol Reef and Moab. There's 156 miles between the two places, and lots of interesting stuff on the way (see Saturday below) to shoot.

Advantages - Meets the requests of most (if not at the top, they said they were okay with it). Lots of unusual scenes, plus lots of well loved scenes. Opportunities for variety and breakaway groups by interest. People can join up along the way without difficulty. Disadvantages - Extra travel miles. Moving places to stay.

Here's the new option with links to many of the scenes. Be sure to look at the Capitol Reef, Arches and Canyonlands links. The photographer is good. (No, it's not my work)

And another option Both Capitol Reef and Moab with something like this for the itinerary:
Head to Moab to stay. Possible evening shoot.
Sunday, April 20 - Shoot in Arches, Canyonlands and Dead Horse Point
Monday, April 21 - More Arches, Canyonlands or even outside of Moab in La Sal/Monticello
Tuesday, Early morning shoot/ slickrock/ river area. Checkout and head home.

Sweet. I am scheduled off around that time. Usually end up making a Canyonlands trop. Have not scheduled anything with my other desert hiking buds as of yet.
I had updated some of my Google maps for Canynlands. We planned on some arch trips, but the Salt Creek Road was washed out. Entered some places we went.
Canyonlands Google Maps
I have a giant database of coordinates if others want to see them.
