As we welcome in the new year together, I'm happy to introduce some major site improvements that will go into effect tonight. First and foremost, we've spent some time recently discussing both the Advanced Editing and Expert Editing rule sets. We weren't completely happy with how Expert panned out, and have spent some time taking the things we do like from Expert and adding them to Advanced. Mainly, combining multiple captures to allow for things like true HDR, noise reduction, and time-lapse photography. We have plans to revise Expert (and likely rename it) at a later date, so until then there won't be any Expert challenges. Hopefully though, with these changes to Advanced Editing, which also include entries sized at 720x720 @ 200kb, everyone will be quite busy for a bit.

Here is a link to the new rules, that has some notation pointing out the changes (underlined = new or changed):

//www.dpchallenge.com/challenge_rules.php?RULES_ID=16

As with any rule set, this one is subject to change. If there's an obvious flaw, we'll attempt to fix it right away, but otherwise we'll let these run for a few weeks and see how they work out.

As far as site updates go, you've probably noticed the new forum buttons (underline and strikeout) by now, but just in case you hadn't noticed the less obvious sizing feature, you can now size the big text box where you type your forum post (or comment) by using the sizing image underneath the box. Just click and drag the image up and down to make the box bigger and smaller -- the image looks like this:

Additionally, the low-vote nag screen has been removed. We're considering it a failed experiment that's more of a hindrance than a benefit. The voting links (1-10) have also been enlarged and anchored at the top of the screen, making it easier to vote on a challenge. Probably of greater interest, there's a new preference (for Members Only, set to On by default) that will email you any new comments received on challenge images that aren't in voting, and on all portfolio images.

That's all for now. Stay tuned throughout 2008 for more DPC enhancements.

Happy New Year!

ETA: These rules have since been revised to remove the allowance for Time Lapse. Read more here.

Nice stuff, Langdon! Thanks, and Happy New Year! (Who'da thought you'd have this place still hanging around your neck this long, huh? You must have done something right...)

Sweet! These new rules only apply to challenges anounced after the rule change though, right?

And since the new rules are announce, how about DPL Season II???????

Nice change though I do have one question.

In the 'you may' section, the part about processing RAW files differently then combining the results has been crossed out. Is the allowance of combining multiple exposures meant to replace this?

sigh ..
still no panos .. :(

That is correct. The first challenge to use the new rules will be the new Member challenge announce at tonight's rolllover (Challenge 796). The existing Advanced Editing Rules should be renamed Advanced Editing V and will be moved to the "Older Challenge Rules" section.

yeah so do I have to use two shots now? it doesn't make sense to me. What if its an action shot and I want process for different parts, You couldn't really do it in two shots I think.
Also, lets say you have a scene that needs a long exposure say a night scene. You do the long exposure without a model in it. Could you then take a shot of the model in the scene and place them in it where they are standing in the second exposure even though they weren't in both shots? THanks for the size bump too!

Let me ask about that. It may be an error, I'm not sure. I'll get back to you all shortly.

Yes, yes, I just removed all the struck-out text, as it was just confusing. The two bits you saw were removed because they were redundant.

Select an area and change level or color is legal now, right?
12/30/2007 11:04:13 PM · #11
With regard to multiple processing of one RAW file, everything that has been legal is still legal. It's just not necessary to specify that you may do this, since it can now be done on from one to ten files (as long as they are all of the same scene and all shot within the challenge window)

Take note this is Advanced Editing, not basic.

I'm gonna have to say, even though I don't do it, the HDR allowance is pretty darn cool.

It is and was before. Under the new version of the rules, though, you may saturate, desaturate or color-shift your entry or existing objects within it. This means, for example, that you can turn a stop sign green, but you can't create a rainbow. Entries like this one would also be illegal: .

When do they start, and when can we enter 720 x?

Begins with the Member Challenge that opens for submission in less than 2 hours, and 720px/200k is the allowable size :-)

Would be illegal?

I don't think Joe's question was answered. I'm guessing you can't take a photo of a landscape and then another one with the model in the landscape as that would not be the "same basic scene". Correct? If I'm right about that then would it also hold true if you capture a bird in one of the captures but not in the others? What about a flock of birds? I'm guessing this would be a grey area or is it cut and dry?

Does this mean if we took 10 shots of the sky over a few hours and combined them so we had 10 moons in the sky that would be legal now?

Would this be illegal now because a specific object was not desaturated? Or is there some other reasoning that is applied in the new rules?
12/30/2007 11:34:30 PM · #24
I'm assuming that a texture overlay is still not legal, since it wouldn't be the same "scene".
12/30/2007 11:34:59 PM · #25
Ooh, HDR in advanced is something this landscape photog is drooling about... :)
