Why was onar photo DQ'ed? Was there TOO much vignetting to it or something?

12/17/2007 06:27:50 AM · #2
Good question...

Nothing seems to stand out as a rule breaker?
12/17/2007 06:36:30 AM · #3
Maybe the vignette hid too much of the image? Hard to say without seeing the original.

I seem to remember another entry (a man sitting in a wheelchair being helped by a woman) that was DQ'd for burning the background out to black. Probably this is similar to this image (a very cool image, by the way!!!)

Mine was DQ'd for turning it to white.

I'm guessing it's more for removing most of the background, not for the color.

Most of the background was already white.

Your original had as much detail on the right side background and foreground as on the left.

So after looking for an outtake and seeing none, do we know why onar was pinged?

See that tree reflection on the hood? The windshield above, blue sky, clouds and trees were removed.

Since you made yours available, Joe, I'll put it here to help the discussion.

Entry:

Original:

Looks like a pretty easy DQ to me. Note that the rules don't give any concessions for objects "that had no impact on the main subject or the image itself." The rules simply state:

You may not: use ANY editing tool to move, remove or duplicate any element of your photograph that would change a typical viewer’s description of the photograph (aside from color or crop), even if the tool is otherwise legal, and regardless of whether you intended the change when the photograph was taken.

How does it change your point of view??? Did I make you think that there wasn't a car in the image??? 99% of the original image still stands.

Get real man, the trash can in the background completely changes my description of the image. Before it is an image of a car and a trash can, after it is just an image of a car. Let's be serious here.

What routerguy said. Everything that you removed on the right side of the picture would be in my description of the original. This is obviously a subjective decision, and I just wanted to share my opinion in the hopes that it might help you and anyone else that sees this thread avoid this kind of DQ in the future.

I'm sure you will have company in the penalty box once that image is validated.

Well then you got screwed.

Looks to me like you both were walking a fine line. I would personally vote to DQ both shots. Obviously that was not the case with the SC. Without knowing the vote count, I would venture to guess that you just barely fell on the wrong side, while crabappl3 just barely fell on the right one.

Well at least someone else understands. And yes I did.

Here's the thing, I know there is a VERY fine line with the editing rules. The whole reason I left the doors on the left and some of the floor was so I didn't change any element of your photograph that would change a typical viewer’s description of the photograph. I yes I did use the dodge too to remove some area's and that is allowed but I don't think I broke any rules here.

I do understand that a typical viewer depends on the person but honestly does the typical viewer think that I completely altered this photograph to make them believe that it was something other than its main subjects? He removed everything from the background all together. Can someone tell me where that line is?
