Here are some old pics from my files that I thought would have fit the black challenge. Any feedback?

Photos aren't bad, but the challenge is to photograph something that IS black. Not photograph something in B&W. I personally would have voted these lower, if they were in the challenge.

what about something that is black , thats a BW photo?
would you vote that lower too?

I think they are fantastic photos....very nice. But I also would score them lower. The challenge is not take a photo and make it black and white-its to take a photo of something black.

If it's submitted to a "Red" challenge, yes. Challenge rules are there for a reason. Why is it so hard for people to understand that?

im not really working on the B&W scheme so much as a photo of "blackness" This does not necessarily mean the photo has to be of an object that is black, although to forest photograph has a black subject. Isnt the point of the challenge to capture the essence of the color black in the photograph? I guess voters really want to see black subjects instead though. Thanks for the feedback.

I took a photo of something black and made it black and white to give it more depth. would that score lower?
02/15/2004 06:19:44 PM · #8
i don't think so...
it would only score lower if it was going to score lower allready...or if the B&W made the shot worse, as aposed to better... it is a judement call you have to make.. it is not given either way.

yeah.. i think the subject is mean to be black
quoting from the rules

being of the achromatic color of maximum darkness; having little or no hue owing to absorption of almost all incident light
02/15/2004 06:24:42 PM · #10
So basicly all that says is dark in color, not black.

It goes on to say:

Take your best shot at capturing something black. Be creative and use your imagination!

It explicitly said black.

ok... you got me. and i did.
02/15/2004 06:37:24 PM · #13
yes i agree.. it should be a pic of something BLACK.

i think it would be nice if we all agreed BEFORE the challenge, so people don't get let down by low scores when they enetered a dark picture making everything LOOK black... even though the subject is blue or something...
02/15/2004 06:52:19 PM · #14
How are you going to know if something was blue or another color if it's desaturated? Not attacking you, just curious.
Edit:
Mine was black, but any other dark color would look about the same if it's desaturated.

I would think if the photo is very dark as eaphelps photos are it fits the challenge very well :)
02/15/2004 07:14:30 PM · #16
I'll probably get a low score. The thing I took a picture of is black, but it's also in black and white and really could be any color.

Oh well.
02/15/2004 07:33:44 PM · #17
How about pitch black, or as black as night? No good?
02/15/2004 07:36:01 PM · #18
On this one I could be shooting for my lowest score.:(

I did the same thing. I took this great pic and was about to submit it when I re read the rules, and read it as the subject has to be black. Spent the rest of the day revising my idea. (realized I have very little intereting black things around my house!) Oh well, time will tell

Nice to wake up on a Monday morning and see that for once most people have interpreted the challenge my way - photograph something that is black.

I have a black subject with a white background.... lets see

Make sure you see the "all black" pictures in this thread. I personally don't think it is a good idea.

It does say something 'black' in the latter part, the first part implies only very subtle light illuminating the subject.

i.e something along the lines of this ribbon winner....
or this
oops one sec wrong shot
right one (i hope)

Actually, it says to photograph "something" black. This photo is of someone, not black, with a black background. I would not consider this in the context of this challenge, as good as it is.

some of you people are so completely stuck on sitting in the box. this really ticks me off. I haven't been to another site that chokes creativity quite as much as this one. i look at these challenge topics as general guide lines not cages. bend a bit folks! unclench your cheeks and relax.

I know, I've been warned. My pic isn't all black. That's been done to many times. Thanks EddyG for the advice anyway.
