Message to self: STOP checking picture's current score every five minutes. It goes up and down but always goes back to what it was when first checked Monday morning. It's only 0.031 different after 160 votes (disregarding all the ups and downs inbetween)! ;-)

Sad thing is, if I manage to submit a picture for "On the road", I'll surely be going through the same thing again. Sigh!

I've just come back from a long weekend away from my computer, having submitted a photo before I left, and to my surprise it had already received 140+ votes by the end of Tuesday. It's now got 155+ votes, and the score hasn't changed more than 0.05 since yesterday, but I can't help refreshing the page every so often, regardless of the fact that most of the votes are already cast... nothing like realtime updates to your score to bring on a mild case of OCD ;o)

Mine has gone from a 4.6 to a 5.3 since Monday. I know that isn't the greatest improvement, but that coupled with some very complimentary comments and I am thrilled to keep checking back. I really am hoping that maybe I can reach a 5.6 when the trash votes get thrown out Sunday night.

whats a trash vote?

Okay, good! I'm not the only one obsessing. "Just one more refresh....".
I think I am obsessing this time because I thought I was able to submit a worthy photo.... to find out that it is rec'ving comments that validate my worst fear about it. I will not elaborate until next week - that is if I don't curl up and die right here infront of the computer from lack of sleep, nutrition and or radiation exposure from the monitor first. "What was that, kids? Oh!... You mean you wanted to eat today?" ;-p

It's the votes from the people who give a high percentage of low end votes. The system is set to disregard those scores sometime just before the challenge ends. It is also set up to throw out all the votes by people who voted on less than 20% of the submissions.

I call that trash votes cause they get thrown out like garbage.

This is the first week that I have watched my scores progress (or degress) I am begining to form a theory that my photo's score is directly proportional to the height of the sun on the East Coast. It seems to rise in the morning and fall after dark.

Watching my score is equatable to watching a train wreck. I can't seem to pull my fingers away from the Refresh button

The system actually automatically ignores < 20% now. The trash votes thrown out on Sunday night are people who vote > 50% 1s and 2s... which should still probably help :)

Thanks all for making me feel more normal (or should I say: not alone) again.

Gotta go, haven't checked my score in about 23 seconds (although, I know it's only a matter of time until my boss finds me out and puts an end to all this! ;o)

Lets face it, we are all just addicts.

Each additional vote has less impact on the score than the one before it. What I want to see are comments. I keep hoping someone will see the photo like I do, but unfortunately almost every comment is the same. Please, no more comments about not being able to see the babies face in the shadows.

Does it also throw out people who vote >50% 9s and 10s? :)

If so many people comment that they are not able to see the babies face, then I guess thats a fact then :)

Remember, Zeissman: each and every person who looks at your photo is *independently* drawing conclusions. they don't all know what everyone else said.

and you know what? i wouldnt have them do it any differently. if one person independently came up with a conclusion that had not been heard by me, then I would be mucho thankful.

the other benefit of hearing something repeated is that it's like a statistical sampling - if only one person says it, it might not be fully true, but if a lot of people say the same thing, then you kind of know it's true, as remie said.

Remie, I would fall over in my chair if I saw someone come to this site and vote all 9's and 10's. People don't work that way..if people act like retards they always go for the lowest common denominator factor...ala 1's and 2's :-)

yes it is a fact, but I know the reason. I appreciate all of the thoughtful comments, but I think I understand the situation now. There were some good ideas in there, but I think all bases are covered. This was really just a monitor calibration issue I think.

Judging by your web page, I do not think you have too much to stress over.

Ok, here's a suggestion: Can we stop voting for the current challenge a little early? Like now? I've been watching my score being chipped away bit by bit since this morning. :-(

I've also finally submitted my entry for the road challenge. I'm not totally happy with it, but I've been admiring those of you that consistently submit well to every challenge, and I figured, I should at least start submitting to every challenge if at all possible. Maybe one of these days I'll even do it well. :-)

I'm wondering if this is an across the board trend. Mine went steadily up all week to reach it's peak last night. It is much lower today. Oh well, it doesn't matter that much.
06/09/2002 04:13:56 PM · #21
yeah i am always watching my score ... but it's fun ... granted it's not as high as i hoped ... but then again there is always room for improvement ... but as of today it is lower than it was last night .... yet compared to the beginning of the week it's higher - yippee :o)

I also want to thank everyone who commented on the photo ... the more comments - the more suggestions ... the more you pick my brain to do better- i love it!
