I want a faster lens and am kinda poor so I see this lens and read about it and probally gonna get it. Does anyone have any comments on it or something better in the same price range??????

Get. The only thing in the same price range is the 18-55 kit lens, the 50 is much better.

Nothing better in the price range ... not even close. Plastic, but built well enough. Get a $15 reversing ring and you'll have a great substitute for a macro lens as well (allows you to put it on the camera backwards).

It is hard to beat the 50mm 1.8.

Sharp, cheap, light, and fast.

My only complaint would be the field of view. On a digital body, it behaves like a 75mm; Personally, I find this to be a bit long for a simple walk around lens.

As others have said great lens for the $$, but just don't drop it.

is there much diffrence between the 50mm 1.8 and the 5omm 1.8d besides the cropping factor?

There is no difference in cropping.
All 50mm lenses have the same "cropping factor".
In other words, lenses don't have a cropping factor - it's the sensor that determines it.

There is little difference between the "D" and non-"D" versions.
The "D" sends some distance info to the body for TTL calcultaions only (what i've been told at least).

Go to Nikon's site and see what they say.

If price were not a factor, should he also consider the 50mm 1.4?

I've read that the 1.8 is sharper and has less distortion than the 1.4
But you lose the build quality and 3/4 of a stop.

I just bought this lens in NZ but haven't used it yet. Original price was higher but exchange rates and no GST/PST lowered it by about a third, then he knocked another $20 off because he only had the (locked) display case model left. Seems pristine and has box and paperwork, so yeah, I'll take a deal :)

I wasn't sure if I should but, after reading here, I think I'll be happy.

You'll only be happy if you like manual focus.
Your D40 lacks the ability to auto-focus non-AFS lenses.

It's still a great lens.

I actually had a really old manual F1.8 50mm Nikon, I've taken all my best photos with it. Got it for around $25 on ebay. It was definitely worth it for me. So even if your copy is stuck as a manual focus one on the D40, having that sharpness and being able to stop down to 1.8 makes for a fun lens and a lot to learn from.

Then if you upgrade your body you'll get a magic lens autofocus upgrade as well with it.

Good luck getting accurate focus wide open with that dim low mag viewfinder (albeit better than my D70's).
And like you said, you can find better MF 50s for a fifth the price.

At least she didn't get the 85 1.4 before finding this out!

I was just thinking that this question ("Is the 50mm 1.8 lens a good lens?") had been asked too many times, and then I learn something new!

I mostly use my 50mm lens for macro work (examples in my portfolio).

Wow, those are terrific. You used the reversing ring as described by Creature?

Thanks. Yes, I picked a cheap reversing ring up from eBay.

The only problem with a 50mm f/1.8 is that it's the gateway drug to more expensive lenses. You get this one, and suddenly your cheap zooms look like crap...

At least that's what happened to me.

;-)

ditto. i cant stop looking at fast lenses now!

its the only lens i have for my D50 (i bought body only) right now and i love it to bits. worth every penny! slightly long for a walkabout lens as mentioned but you have the 18-55 so thats not a problem. for the price you wont be disappointed!

I knew about that before I bought, but it's not like I've never used manual focus. Would be nicer with, of course, but hey, for the price I'll manage :)
