I'm relatively new here and have submitted a photo for the previous challenge (B&W). So far i've received 10 comments and all have been great suggestions for improvement.

I just want to say this site and the whole idea behind it ROCKS!!

P.S. Keep your eye out for more photos by Brumos.... I will take home the gold. Soon :-)

Glad to know there's another modest/timid/shy photographer in the bunch! ;)

What was your picture? Glad you go good comments, as I have said on other forums, I have a lot of comments, with very well thought out resposes, unfortunately, I think what they are commenting on is differences in monitor calibration. I did learn one thing, don't try to put your subject very far from midtone brightness.

Since the photo being referred to is in the current challenge, it would be wise not to answer this question until after the voting has ended ;o)

I really wish there it would show who took what picture, but I suppose discussing it could affect the results....this is a picture of my dear mom who passed away the next day. I post this as a tribute to her...

Monitor calibration does affect all images, it's one of those uncontrollable variables. When i compare two identical images on my monitor at home and work i see very different tonal values. When viewed at work the image looks completely washed out. The only true way of knowing if an image has good overal values is by looking at the histogram in Photoshop.

Also, Windows(96ppi) machines render images slightly darker than Macs(72ppi).

Well, John, since you have posted a link to your photo of the railroad trestle several times I take it you would welcome a critique. Normally I simply just say "Great shot" or "Perfect," as I am not highly skilled in photography. Over the past six or eight weeks though, as I have read the comments of numerous pictures, both mine and others, I have learned a great deal about how to criticize photos. I would like to take a stab at yours.

First of all, the selection of this old bridge is a natural for black and white.(IMHO)
However, you may have noticed, the rails seem to get smaller the farther away they are in the picture. You should have corrected this, as we all know, the rails MUST stay the same distance apart or the train would derail. (not my opinion sir, FACT)
Also, it would have been much better if the trestle had been made of wood rather than steel and you should have taken the shot from the other end of the bridge.
I notice there is not a train in sight either. There should have been! How could you have left out such a feature? Not just any train either. MUST be a steam locomotive.
One with billowing smoke and huge blasts of steam blowing out the sides. You should have taken the picture at night too, with the engine's headlight shinning and making a beam of light in a slightly foggy, spooky night.
This bridge is soooo typical too. You should find one with a curve or two, and a hill.

You know John, when I first saw the photo I really, really liked it. But now that I have critiqued it I am not so sure anymore. You should go back and re-shoot it as I suggest and see if you don't like it better. Please resubmit when you have corrected all your errors. I'll bet you will get better reviews next time.
Of course these are just my opinions. Other folks may have a different idea of the quality. We all see things a little differently. Better luck in the next challenge.

Good joke David. That was a joke wasn't it? Um, you weren't being mean were you? Oh well, maybe I'd better butt out and go look for some roadkill to run over, oops, I mean shoot, oh you know what I mean.

Of course I did. Hey David, with all the roadkill jokes, I'm really curious what you are going to submit.
