I'll start mine off with this Free Study reject shot. It's an old corncrib that's been a favorite spot of mine to shoot for about a year and a half. I don't know how much longer it will be standing.

It's got a couple of issues that don't make it a good Free Study candidate, but I like it anyway.

First of many edits for my fat fingers.

Day 1

Day 1 - Short-eared Owl

I've been trying to get a good Short-eared Owl photo for several years. It's difficult because they start to fly when light levels have fallen to low levels. I had a good opportunity tonight except that the Owl was almost directly into the sun, extremely backlit and appeared almost black. I needed to increase the exposure by a stop but took one snap before trying open up the exposure. One snap was all I got before he was off. I was shooting at ISO 400 and had to increase exposure by one stop in CaptureNX and use PS shadows tool to get more than a silhouette.

Shot at F4.2 and 1/1250 with a Nikon D200 a 70-200 VR lens plus the 1.7TC. Another "if only" shot, but I'll take it. It's best I've gotten to date. LG

WOW!!!! thanks for all the comments on my corncrib shot!

For those of you who aren't......hicks, a corncrib is a farm outbuilding that is either dual purpose for storing ears of the hard corn that is used for feed, hence the spaced slats, and equipment, or the whole outbuilding is slatted and looks like it's made out of snow fence.

As to the processing, I use CS2, go to filters, go to noise, reduce noise, hammer it all the way to foggy/smooth, which softens the bejeezes out of it, then hit sharpen once or twice to bring back the detail somewhat.

I do that fairly regularly any more 'cause I like the effect, and the clarity guys ping me for it in challenges, but I like the smoothing/softening things that it does for old farm stuff and buildings.

I'll take another shot that I've done this with and show you the original as well. I especially like it in B&W.

This street rod just happens to be one that was cruising last weekend when I was out and about. It looked cool, so I thought I'd bang off a couple for possible FS consideration. I live near Hershey and Carlisle, Pennsylvania, which basically makes central Pennsylvania one of the most automobile intensive areas in the world. You see stuff like this all the time.....it's just another car......8>)

Here: [thumb]618764[/thumb] And Sharp/Normal: [thumb]618779[/thumb]

I like the way that the grille and the pattern in the lights gets sort of blurred, but in a smooth manner.
