Im looking for a free HDR making program that has no watermarks, and has tonemapping. I thought there used to be a fully functional copy of photomatix that was free and didn't have watermarks, but i cant find it. Thanks.

Yeah, I am looking for that too.

A free 200/2.8L, fully functional and no watermarks would be nice too. ;)

This program (easy hdr) looks very interesting. I have read their on-site tutorials, and it looks good. I don't know how much of what they describe is available in the free version though; they say it has a limited feature set compared to the full version, but it apparently does include tone mapping of some level in the free version.

The free version of Photomatix Basic supplies only the "tone compressor" mode of tone mapping, which is much less interesting. I always work in "details enhancement" mode, which is only available in the Pro version. You can't even USE tone compressor to tone map single TIFF or JPG images; you need an image merged from several exposures or a RAW image to use it. It has way fewer controls, and no local contrast adjustment features are present. To be honest I'm not sure why anyone with Photomatix pro would ever use tone compressor over details enhancement, but I haven't really played with it that much. I'm sure there's some areas in which it works better and I just haven't looked hard enough.

But the main thing is, for the "look" of greatly enhanced local area contrast (the look a lot of people think IS what HDRI means, though it really isn't) you need the full version of Photomatix, not the basic version.

From reading, it seems to me the EasyHDR program may offer the same, or similar, results as Photomatix Pro, but as I say I haven't tried it.

R.

I have had some luck with this program Qtpfsgui. It is a free open source HDR program with tonemapping. It takes some time to figure out the right tone mapping settings but once you do it provides fairly acceptable results.

EasyHDR is very different than Photomatix. I use both.

Photomatix does HDR and average, and several Highlights and Shadows. HDR does either details enhancer or tone compressor. And there are a ton of options for you to use.

EasyHDR does HDR. But details enhancer is done on the same screen as tone compressor (local contrast enhancement can be switched off) and you have a basic way to adjust curves. Note that overusing curves can give you some great digital art.

EasyHDR also has some nice WB options. You can set the WB, or set highlight, midtone and shadow WB seperatly.

Anybody know of a similar program for Macs?

Hey Jeff, I just checked the website and there is a download and instructions for installing Qtpfsgui on a Mac OS.

Thanks Justin, I'm a big fan of open source and this looks like it's right up my alley.
Cheers
