What is everyone's opinion--does a person ("individual") or group of people have to be in the composition?

The challenge definition doesn't explicitly say they have to be included. I'm thinking there could be ways "that communicates this concept" without a person(s) in the image.

I agree there "could be ways" but I would still include a person, that's just me however.

I second this...

Challenge Details: "Book smarts" often refers to individuals or groups who obtained their learning through formal learning processes. Create a photo that communicates this concept.

There is a word in there...OFTEN... that states that this concept generally has people in it, but that some do not.

The last statement in the description says to "Create a photo that communicates this concept." So as long as your photo communicates the statement...you should be okay without people in the shot.

But, ofttimes the members doing the scoring take things quite literally and could possibly 'DNMC' you if an "individuals or groups who obtained their learning through formal learning processes" are not actually IN the photo.

Good luck!!!! ;)

I was actually thinking of a photo that displayed a lack of "smarts" - would that be DNMC? Maybe I should just rearrange it to show that the "smarts" would be handy, lol.

I also have another that I almost entered for still life, that I may try to recreate for this. It illustrates the concept, but doesn't have a person in it.

"Book smarts" would never refer to anything but itself of course, as "book smarts" is a noun, not an adjective...

Crap. Just read the "street Smarts" description, which to me sounds related to street smarts, but not exactly how I think of it - my idea would probably be DNMC for too many people.

Description: "Street smarts" often refers to individuals or groups who obtained their learning through informal learning processes and simple, lived experience. Create a photo that communicates this concept.

Sounds to me more like the Amish than street smarts.

This is a ridiculous challenge. ?

I do not understand the meaning of the two challenges, someone can shed me some light on these challenges. Thanks

I really dont think so. Im having a hard time finding something, but that just makes it better.

People are complaining about challenges like Bokeh IV, Soft Focus III, or Landscape VI.

There are certain photo topics that are standard topics like the ones I mentioned.

In order to get the photographer to think out of the box, and have a original topic you have to have a challenge that is, well, challenging.

Congrats for having this type of challenge!

I think the issue is that this is an "English language" concept - not sure that it translates to other languages.

This would be an issue w/ any idiomatic challege (and has been before), where it's not w/ a photographic technique.

The same would happen if we did Nature vs Nurture (and I think this is pretty close to that). "Nature" would get wilderness landscapes that have nothing to do w/ the "born w/ it" concept (and I believe "street smarts are not necessarily or usually "learned" - it's a more instinctual sort of knowledge). And "nurture" would get all kinds of babes in arms or momma-and-baby animals, instead of the meaning here which is more "you have to be taught" (kinda like book smarts, lol!).

Sorry - I don't have a good shot yet, so I'm rambling.

I'm just curious if these will be the lowest combined entries for one week since going to the new exculsive open format. Its one day until rollover and there are just a bit over 50 entries combined? Wow thats low.

Work, other obligations and the pending holiday descent of house guests sucking every waking minute out of the day lately. Probably other folks pretty busy too. I actually have a good idea but there's no way I'll get time to shoot it.

The challenging part is it requires people. I don't have access to a number of people that I could use as models (other than kids, and I don't see kid shots scoring high in this).

The other option is to seek a candid type shot downtown (I use "downtown" loosely for our town) and the odds of finding a scenario that works is thin so I'd rather use my time some other way. JMO of course.

First time in a while that I've passed on an open challenge...

this is gonna be very interesting... and low entry contest :P for both... I can't wait :D

I am amazed at the low entry total. Neither looks like it will break 100. I guess my shot is in...

An interesting challenge to ponder. I'm not shooting for the challenge but the only scene I can think of for Book Smarts is a cooking scene with a cook book taking an important role in the composition.

Edit: and maybe , Doctors ,Lawyers... so many professions that take a lot of book smarts to get started.

Did anybody notice the word FORMAL in the details for book smart? Formal learning is the reading of books to obtain a knowledge, how you project this is up to you..IMO the low entry level is no latteral thinking to fit the challenge...So lets hope the voting is latteral.

For street smart, does vending on the street qualify as street smarts?

OK, lost my mind and submitted a last minute entry. Expecting to regret this but at least I will be in the top 100!
