...When you are around an area that you are photographing, and the location is lifeless and dull, if you stick around long enough, the image will eventually present it's self.

100% agree. There is beauty, of sorts, everywhere

I agree. As they say, beauty is in the details, which tend to reveal themselves over time.

What man if you all agree , how will we debate this out. This is not fair.

The long or the short of it, a great photo is serendipitous!

Well, do you interrupt the lifeless, dull location, and bring in your own imagery to make the photo come alive??

I think photography makes pretty much anything beautiful. You see the world through a different point of view.

Sometimes the first shot is the one..... rarely but it happens. I'm not disagreeing but something should be said for serendipity and plain dumb luck.....

"When the student is ready, the teacher will appear."

It seems I am terminally attempting to get ready.

jjstager2, to whom is your quote attributed? Something I have always dimly believed, so yes, I agree.

Yes. I like the way you personalized location (it's self). I strongly agree.

Remember those stereograms in the middle of the malls in the 1990s? Pretty boring, until you just looked at it for awhile. There's a park not far from where I work, and other than a few benches and some playground equipment it's pretty boring, especially this time of year when the entire place just looks brown and dull. But more often than not I walk away with images worth showing off...

My belief if that the image will very quickly present itself if you forgot your camera.

My son and I discussed this thread today while we were at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens.

We decided to sit for awhile on a bench and while sitting there I was thinking that the Gardens is a beautiful place, but there is nothing that I could see at the moment that would have been worth taking a picture of. From that vantage point nothing looked interesting enough or beautiful enough.

Then, my son pointed out some very large ants on a smooth trunked tree about 25 feet away. The sun was low on the horizon and from that distance we could clearly see the ants and their very long shadows across the tree trunk. A closeup of a single ant with it's extremely long shadow would have made a fantastic shot....

....if only I had brought my camera!

I usually always have a camera with me. But today, I remembered it after we got into the car and I decided not to go back in the house for it.

But back to the thread. I told him about this thread and how most DPC'ers so far believed that eventually the shot will present itself.

I disagree, not strongly, but I disagree. Maybe I take things too literally, but, if the location is lifeless an dull (and you're not saying anything about the weather/light/situation changing), it seems to me it's a better idea to move on elsewhere. After all, if everything stays the same (lifeless/dull), even if an image "presented itself (or it's self)", it likely would be pretty lifeless and dull. Oh well.

Out of curiosity, is the actual quote (I'm assuming it is a quote), " .... the image will eventually present it's self."?

I tend to also lack patience but every single time I have spent time in a dull and lifeless situation I've gotten good shots. In other words there's never a dull and lifeless moment ever at least not on this planet. Sometimes you have to look a hard for it but it's always there. yakatme's post illustrates one such example.
