Now that would have been interesting - swinging a cat and then letting go.....

I agree.
I think, and my scores/comments support, that most people understood the topic differently than me.
I saw "capture a FEELING of letting go". Not literally letting go of an object.
By "letting go", I thaught of getting crazy, letting loose, being uninhibited.
Again, I don't think most people saw it that way.

WOW, 78 votes, a low score of 5.1?? and only 2 comments. I was trying to convey the pain or regret of letting go. I thought I did a pretty good job in comparison to so many of the ones I voted. Of course maybe everyone is ultra low.

I'm also biased :)

Yeah. 4.1, 96 votes, and 9 comments telling me it either doesn't fit the theme or can't tell what it is. Or both.

It's kind of an American (I guess?) post-modern, pop-psych, touchy-feely term for emotionally accepting the loss of the person (through death, divorce, whatever). When the person dies or leaves, if you're still "holding on", you haven't accepted that they are gone. When you have properly grieved, and accepted the loss, and moved on, you have "let go" - or, that process (yes, apparently there has to be a process to achieve this state) would be refered to "letting go". (Not "letting go" is very, very bad. It leads to lots of screwed up folks who end up on psychiatrist couches, daytime TV shows, or showing up on their ex-spouses doorstep with semi-automatic weapons.)

Thanks - that's helpful and helps explain the cultural background to the surprising number of grave/lost one shots. textures will be simpler me thinks! There's a PhD thesis somewhere for someone in some of these challenges!

Me too, please :-).

Does "ALL CAPS" in comments mean shouting at you?

louddog-

That's sad and kinda interesting that you would request a disqualification...especially since you are a critical voter yourself

Don't be sorry! I think it is better to be sincere and give your opinion , whether positive or negative, than being anonimous. It opens up the posibility for opinion exchange and learning from it.

I just finished voting on this challenge and came to the forums to rant when I saw a topic was started.
I know we have new photographers on DPC. I know everyone isn't on the same level. What I would like to know is...what are they doing to grow, improve, learn ? I learned from DPC and talking to Setzler one on one for 2 years now. I read books and surf the web for hours. Now I'm in college taking photography courses. I'm not saying this is what anyone should do. I do feel if you're really loving photography and want to move beyond snapshot level, you must apply yourself and search out ways to do that. The photos in this challenge, for whatever reason, for the most part rated 4 or 5 for me at best. I did give one 10 and a few 6 or 7's. The titles on most, not all, SUCK. The photo should set the mood, tell it's own story and not depend on a paragraph of jumbled words to say oh this is me letting go of a McDonalds cup in the trash can with the huge yellow M on it ! Think before you click. Read up on photography rules. Know what leading lines, thirds, frames, contrasting colors, shapes and such mean and why they give a photo impact. Learn to do great composition. I often find myself only posting comments to my higher scoring photos because I feel if I post the good and bad in a photo I'll get attacked through email or some rant in the forums. Bottom line here is...do you want the truth and to learn or do you want someone that will just co-sign your BS ?

Maybe my comments here belong in a rant. This isn't meant to be a rant. It's meant to explain why I feel like I do about most of the photos in this challenge. It's meant to help not attack. Surf and learn. Look at winning photos on websites and ask yourself why they won. What made them great ? And please, learn to title your photos.

Amen Shizzzam!
Funny I just did my voting & had exactly the same impression. I don't think I have ever given so many low scores in my short life here on DPC.
I was surprized with the lack of originality of so many images.
I also did a pozed self portrate of me trying to "Let Go" of an ex partner. But fortunately I decided it was crap & didn't submit it. My next attempt was of my children releasing a little mouse that our cat had brought into the house. Luck I didn't post that, would have been criticized as family snapshot. Next I photographed dropping a bucket full of water. Made a mess in the cellar & couldnt get rid of the distracting background. Lucky or it would have been criticized as another droping something photo. So I took something else, which is struggling to keep it's head above 5, and wasn't mentioned in any other criticizms in this thread (Yet).
Textures will be better!!

Thank you rgarciah55 and Shiiizzzam

It seems that having 18 here doesn't count as something positive.
For most of the people here.
Thank you once again, and others who gave your
honest opinion, and did not attacked me insantly
not considiring one moment about my post.

Hope to heare from you again.
And, hope that textures will be better!

Regards,
Tomislav.

Shiiizzzam...

I would hope that if you don't like my photo that you would feel free to offer to share your knowledge of the elements you have mentioned in your post. That's why I'm here. I want to learn to know and use my camera to it's fullest capabilities. I also want to learn how to compose and shoot meaningful photos. Each photo will not be meaningful to everyone, but I want to know basics that will apply to any "audience."

I don't send nasty emails! :)

I just want to say that I'm an 16 years old kid, who is very interested in photography, and I'm not in DPC for long time now... It will be a year soon. This is my eight challenge now and I'm very pleased with my results so far. I have a lack of experience and I'm here to learn as much as I can about photography.
I think that people here can learn only if other people give them there comment or opinion about something. Maybe my opinion doesn't count like opinion from example: Pitsaman, Jacko or Magnetic666, but I think that I'm still able to have my opinion, and that from my questions and opinions I can learn alot, and other people can learn alot.
Once again I want to thank all the people who inpsired me here in DPC and who always answered my questions and gave their comments.
I think that biggest purpose of DPC is improving photographic sence of an individual.
