oh yea and lots of graves, the fart one is maybe one of the few with a bit of imagination. :)

Don't forget that "10" is really close to the arrows that take you to the next picture without voting. It is entirely possible that an errant mouse-click could give a picture a "10" without the person even realizing they did so, since both voting and clicking the "next arrows" have the same end-result of moving on to the next picture...

I do not have a photo in the Letting Go Challenge:

Blanket condemnation-?
Give the folks that worked hard, cared, and are new a little slack.

I'm new to DPC and this is my first challenge. I did spend a lot of time looking at the entries in past challenges and was very impressed with both the range of photographic styles and the quality. Having looked at the entries for 'Letting Go' I must admit that I was disappointed in the overall standard (don't think mine is an exception by the way!). A few stand out but nothing that screamed 'look at me' or with certain 9 or 10 potential. Perhaps it was the difficulty in getting to grips with the theme? It did suggest a lot of head scratching and not a lot of time to explore well thought out idea. Guess this happens now and again..

Also, I did note the fact that the grave/lost loved one/broken marriage theme was probably contrived in most cases (at least i hope so!) One thing I look for (and this is purely personal but would be interested in what others think) is a degree of authenticity in a shot. Obviously this is a very subjective thing but with such obvious 'stage management' of feelings I think the photos lack that essential aspect of communicating with the viewer.

Finally the grave/lost loved one/broken marriage interpretation is not obvious to me, a European - can someone inform me whether in US or Canada 'letting go' is a term used in this context?

Fantastic site though - love it to bits and it's a trmendous source of inspiration. Looking forward to textures which my cabbages might have been good for?

Since my ideas never made it film..umm, hardrive (hands letting go and a graveyard theme, glad i didn't make it!) i decided to spend my efforts in voting, or more precisely commenting. I voted on 100% and commented on 47%. I tried not to be harsh, but honest. It is my opinion, and i am entitle to it. I am not god (great overseeing director) so my comments can be ignored to no one's peril.

I have a 10 for fun, and a couple of 1s. Sorry, but gratuitous sunsets and family snapshots are not worthy of more.

ideas for textures..i have some great shots, but have to take them this week, making me get creative all over again! The real challenge is to be obvious and unique...

good quality pics.
Beside that, i messed up my CF card, an need a new one.

So, you can think whatever you want.
I just told my opinoon here, nothing else...

Look man, i belive you, my camera is not the brightest eyther that's why I don't submit too often eyther. I also agreed on most pictures lacking imagination. What I didn't like was your kinda arogant superiourity in your breath when you started this, without showing anything instead. It's kinda loughing on others that atleast try, while you don't have the guts to do it yourself or something like that.

I didn't enter this one. I couldn't get my boss to let go of the rope hanging off the roof, so no shot. Lots of screaming though.

Kind of off-topic but, T.E. your posts always bust me up. That's some twisted mind you have there and I like it! :-)

it's funny how, when someone shares their opinion, people automatically assume that they're also taking an 'i'm right and you all are wrong' attitude.

in this type of situation, rather than take it as a confrontation, i'd be more curious and wonder 'why did you think that?' and 'were there any that weren't failures at all?' i would try to get them to give me something constructive...

and above all i'd think 'it's just one person's opinion. even if they're a nut or a fool, who cares, they are just one person'. . .

So you would have cut the rope?

I'm getting slaughtered on this one. UHG! I figued I'd suffer from a lot of people thinking it was off topic, but not this bad. Lesson learned, don't stretch to meet a topic...

Only one comment so far and it says the shot is a beauty. At least one person likes it!

PS when I vote lower because I think it's off topic I leave a comment so the person can explain it to me if they chose to. I'm not an expert on all topics and don't pretend to be. If you can make a sound argument of why it is on topic I reconsider my vote.
02/11/2004 01:33:22 PM · #40
I haven't been voting for long here but It does seem like a thin crop this week. I guess the term letting go is a tough one and I have found that scoring them has been tough because some of my favorite images don't seem to relate to the challenge in only the most tangential way. Also I found that in looking at the group it was hard to be fair to the twelfth wedding ring, the fifth drop or... well you know what I mean. It would be much easier to score if the scoring was split between five points for "How well does this image fullfill the topic" and five points for "How good is this image?". my base score is hovering around a three and it makes me feel like a nag. I have great hope that we can all go out and get a shot of a texture for this week: )
02/11/2004 01:37:37 PM · #41
I wish people that give smaller scores would comment more. I only have 3 comments, and they are all from people who likes it. I wish people who doesn't would comment too so maybe I learn something?

He didnt say "these pics sucked" he said the challenge failed for most of the submissions. He didnt even imply ALL the pictures sucked. He's new and actually has a fairly high vote cast score of 6.7, which seems to suggest he liked quite a lot of the photographs he has voted on.

I've been around DPC for over a year now, I know what to expect in an open challenge - the usual crop of pictures that the majority of people complain about. If you come to DPC from other art/photography/contest sites and see some of the things that are submitted to this 'contest' site then it can certainly be quite different. That said, I found the majority of the shots in 'Letting Go' to be quite uninspiring as well.

Note: I've been on DPC over a year, entered 49 challenges, and my portfolio of photographs is available by clicking on my name to the left if you care to evaluate my ability to hold an opinion and whether I'm 'good' enough to like or dislike photographs.

I must've read the wrong thread, cause I coulda SWORN he was implying the pics suck, actually he came right out and said it was a "total failure". Now where did I put that silly head of mine again..it must be here ...somewhere...*looks around*...oh hear it is! I accidentally dropped it in the "no talent ass clowns" box that seems to be getting full these days.

Thank you for your comments and replys.

Maybe I am a little arogant, but I admit it! ;)
sorry if I offended you at any way.
Im not that long here, but who says this is my
only profile?? ;) you just don't know... ;)

To all "I'm mr. Big shoot here" etc. sorry for
giving my opinion. it seems that having an opinion
that is negativ is not good around here.

And thx to moodville. It seems that she is one of the
few who tryed to understand, and not go and attack me
not understanding what I was thinking.

I didn't say that ALL pictuers sux, but manny of them
missed the piont. I gave few 10's and 1's but most of votes
where around 4.
And, high points were for those that made me laugh.

Cheers,
and I hope that next challenge will be bettet.
And, don't be so grupmy! :)

P.S
Sorry for my crappy english

What he said was

"This challenge was a total faliure for
the most of submission.
IMHO just few good pics that got the topic right!"

That says to me that he didnt think ALL the images sucked. I also doubt anyone on DPC could go through the entire challenge and not find one photograph that did not 'fail' to capture the point of the challenge or had enough technical difficulties to be considered below par. He is also not the only person to say that he was disappointed with the challenge in general. If you wish to claim that what he said translates to 'all the pics suck' then so be it, I chose to translate it to mean that he liked some and disliked others.

My main point was toward the seeming lynching he received for giving his opinions. You can have an opinion, whether negative or positive, toward photography and art in general. If you give technical opinions and they are incorrect then the credibility of your opinion is lessened, but you do not need a photography decree or a professional portfolio in order to state whether you like or dislike anything.

If a thread was started by someone who absolutely loved the majority of the challenge submissions then people would not be sarcastic wanting to see their portfolio or screaming out for credentials. The only difference between the posts is that one person is emphasising the images they dont like as opposed to the images they do like. It could be the same equal amount of likes and dislikes but because one is positive and the other negative the negative would be attacked.

No one is saying all the picture suck, no one is saying the photographers who submitted to the challenge have no talent. Someone has stated that they did not care for the majority of the images in a challenge, and it happens every week.

imagine if you had to have held political office to have a 'valid' opinion about political candidates.

Imagine if you had to pass some kind of basic competency test to HOLD political office.

You are communicating OK -- don't be sorry for that! I wonder how many of the pictures which "missed the point" might seem on-topic to someone else. If you care to email me with a list of a few you felt were too far off-topic, I'll be glad to check and see if I can figure out what the photographer's point was.

No one seems to be able to tell what my photo is of, or how it relates to the theme. So I guess I'm a total failure in that sense, but it fits the theme perfectly. If you know what it was. :)
