This challenge was a total faliure for
the most of submission.
IMHO just few good pics that got the topic right!
Why? It seems that people don't have ideas?

Lately most people use big shutter speed, but
get no good pictures.
Use more of your imagination, not just shutter speed!

Hope the best one wins!

I assume your first and top quality submission is in this challenge ?

I really dislike this weeks submitions.
Most of the pictures are almost the same... People simply didn't have any ideas.
Most of the pics isn't realted with the subject of challenge.

The subject of the challenge was so great, there was so many things that you could shoot for it, but the people simply didn't get any smart ideas for it.
Too bad!

Well, you assume - WRONG!
I messed up my camera, so I couldn't shoot any.
Next time I will.

Well, it's certenly not a flower. ok?
Those few pics of graves, and people on graveyard
are good. And drops aren't bad too.

I would made "tunel" like "when you die"

In as much as I'd like to rant with low scores, my fault (my idea might be wrong to most of you), but "I'm letting it Go!". Just enjoy shooting! :-)

look man, I didn't ask you to believe me.
You can say what ever you want, but with my 18 years,
no job (im still in school) I can't afford great
equipment. And, with my minolta e201 I just can't get
good quality pics.
Beside that, i messed up my CF card, an need a new one.

So, you can think whatever you want.
I just told my opinoon here, nothing else...

I said this when I was on photocritique, I said it when I was submitting to Photosig and I'll say it again here - sometimes great critiquers aren't great photographers. Sometimes great critiquers don't want their own work critiqued.

And yet, if you don't submit, I don't care what you think. I have nothing on which to base your opinion, unlike those 'great critiquers' who are 'great' for some reason (even if it's a bad reason).

especially non constructive critiques, and when the critic person does not have any picture in any challenge or his portfolio.

this doesn't mean most submissions, don't lack immagination. I saw so many rings and letters I would rename the challenge "Lord of the rings and letters" or something...

Of course not. But if someone doesnt shoot, or submit, what is the basis for it? The person who doesn't like my photo could be someone great who I should listen to, or they could just be Joe Croatian having a bad day and happening upon DPC and commenting on a given pic.

of course... one must always keep the salt shaker handy ;). i just always think it's funny that when someone expresses an opinion, someone else's automatic kneejerk reaction is to ask their credentials.

imagine if you had to have held political office to have a 'valid' opinion about political candidates.

I agree. :) And as I said, with some people you don't have to ask. But a blanket "these pics sucked" is very very high in salt grains.

And I don't think Joe Blow should vote, whether or not they are "allowed" if they don't know anything of any of the candidates. But that's another rant. lol

He didnt say "these pics sucked" he said the challenge failed for most of the submissions. He didnt even imply ALL the pictures sucked. He's new and actually has a fairly high vote cast score of 6.7, which seems to suggest he liked quite a lot of the photographs he has voted on.

I've been around DPC for over a year now, I know what to expect in an open challenge - the usual crop of pictures that the majority of people complain about. If you come to DPC from other art/photography/contest sites and see some of the things that are submitted to this 'contest' site then it can certainly be quite different. That said, I found the majority of the shots in 'Letting Go' to be quite uninspiring as well.

Note: I've been on DPC over a year, entered 49 challenges, and my portfolio of photographs is available by clicking on my name to the left if you care to evaluate my ability to hold an opinion and whether I'm 'good' enough to like or dislike photographs.

i thought it would be interesting to break it down into categories:
graveyards or grave markers: 9
hands literally dropping something:9
rings
rings with letters
letters :8
birds:6
and one fart joke

I didn't agree or disagree with him. Coming to the site, being new, starting the typical "wow, this challenge has bad pics" post is bound to get a few darts directed back at the poster.

And yes, you and I have both been around for awhile now. All I'm saying is if you leave the comment "this sucks" I will try and figure out why because your opinion DOES matter and if he leaves the comment "this sucks" I will probably not give a rats ass because I don't know if he knows sucks from socks.

I did not have an idea until 45 minutes before submission deadline.

My score was at a 10 ( i did a screan print for proof)

then other people started to vote and now Im down at a 4.5 :( oh well, my pic was just meant as a little bit of comic releif rather than a real contender...

Last night I did a bunch of voting and was pretty un-impressed as a whole. I was really suprised at the submissions.
02/11/2004 10:42:38 AM · #23
I'm right there with you - snapped a couple of pics right before the deadline with a quickie set-up of a disfavored topic...and am getting about what I thought I'd get...was funny though, after the first 15 votes or so, I was in the 3's....comical based on the images I've seen that normally get that score (not that mine is great, but it isn't overly-shoddy either). Some subject haters will vote mine down, as they are entitled to do. Will likely finish in the low 5's, but it was fun to finally enter again.

The voting is a little curious in some respects, as pointed out in other threads....every pic in the zodiac challenge (at least all of the lowest rated pics) received a 10. Makes me suspicious....a couple possible scenarios....somebody voted 10 for most everything, or people score the obviously bad pics highly to boost their vote point average....I think these are fringe issues as the majority (probably the vast majority) seem to simply vote for what they like with some counting the subject matter-to-theme connection more than others (I feel like I fall in the former category, but don't know if that actually pans out in how I've voted).

Edit to note that it is, of course, possible that every pic had someone so in love with it they gave it a 10. Don't want to get hammered by the obvious.

Oh boy -

I'll be lucky to get out of this one with a "4".

The vague nature of "letting go" (so many meanings, literal and figurative) made this a very hard challenge and so many people won't "get" each other's idea of what "letting go" means.

Hell, I looked at mine this morning and said to myself, "What WAS I thinking?"

Ah well.

I'll edit my last post to say that "comical" wasn't appropriate - have just reviewed some prior challenges and have seen lower scores than I thought were typically given - even at the bottom. (I re-read my post and it sounded snotty like "how could one of my photos ever be given a 3 or lower" LOL. Not my intent.
