Wondering if any of you lovely people could recommend an online service for me, I'm looking for a hosting solution to enable about 12 college students to display their end of year photo expo (for around 4 months, most seem to offer a min of 1 year)

Brief details:
* for about 12 students wishing to display between 15 to 35 images each
* a home page that links each of the students names to a page for each student with brief person bio and thumbnails linking to full image browsing
* visitors to the site should be able to purchase/order the students images (in UK £)

thinking/hoping :) there must be someone out there who has a solution to this growing trend for online expos of photographers work that a dpc'er can recommend?

Thanks !
Kate

My Pbase gallery

I like pbase. You could get one account and have each student have their own gallery within. They could individually customize their own gallery, too, which would add individualism. It only costs around $25 a year.

I think they have their "purchase prints" up and running but I've never utilized that feature. You'd have to check into it.

thanks Marj - pbase is a nice clean looking site (also like your choice of #1 lens - am hoping to get that one next... at some point :)

tho really would prefer a site where we could use our own domain ...

Then the best thing for you to do is bite the bullet spend the 9.99 for the domain, and 5 bucks or less for the year hosting and install, coppermine or gallery

I believe they both have plugins that allow images to be purchased from a 3rd party vender.

Though for me,

I would build my own pages, w/thumb and use paypal w/shopping cart or buy now options.

Takes a bit more work/time to set up, but can't go wrong there.

thanks Andrew, yea we did consider something like that (we do have a bit of tech & creative skill - but not sure we're upto installing gallery from scratch or perhaps hooking paypal into a site)

guess I should mention there is a (small) budget to spend to achieve something kinda glossy - as this will be an end of year show happy to part with some money to get a nice looking site that would enable peeps to browse / enjoy / purchase :)

hoped there might be something out there that was more 'out of the box' easy to run with kinda solution

upto installing? You mean you can't take the time to click a button?

If you use a gallery program like copermine, you can most likely have hosting with someone like 'hostgator' and they have fantastico where you just click a button, fill in user name password of admin and its installed. Very simple.

As for using paypal, if you have an account already its just as easy to copy and paste to use it on your site. change a few elements so you know what is being sold, and its even easy to change who gets paid (They need a paypal account to do it automaticly)

Its not that difficult to me what you are asking for. I could post a (for-sale) gallery with landing page of about say, 200 images in just a few hours. That includes just simple html pages and paypal shopping carts.

Heck, in the time between my two responses I could have built it L()L.

If you don't want to use paypal, you may want to think about using a pre-existing host. If you do anything on your own domain, you need to pay for accepting payment and for the most part it isn't cheap.

If you have a lot of web design know-how at your disposal, maybe creating a submit function and they 'snail-mail' you payment. Other than that, it isn't worth it to have your own domain, specially for four months.

i think i replied politely and informatively to your initial post; i'm not sure the same can be said of your last reply

as mentioned, we are after a provided solution, that is 'out of the box', i.e. not one we need to build ourselves

as it is an 'end of year' show it is worth spending some money on ensuring the site is good and professional looking, which includes using a relevant domain

thought it might be useful to post who we ended up using for our end of year show photo website hosting ...

a great company called //www.photium.com

for our needs their 'light package' was perfect which cost £0 to setup then £7.27 a month (or around £80 a year)

we then bought a domain for around £8 for the year which the photium service enabled us to use

(no extra costs)

prints can also be purchased via the site (although in the end my student group opted not to do this online, images were simply sold in person at the exhibition gallery)

you can have a 30 day free trial which enables you to get to know their admin system too before you commit

all good :)

Check with Lunarpages as I am sure they give free websites to schools and such. It might be what you need.

Click on the above link and then scroll down the page and on the right hand side you will see what I am referring to.
