I suggest that the free study challenges be abandoned. It's very obvious that the voters are not interested in them when you examine the number of votes that are cast. The winning photo in the most recent free study only received 126 votes in that challenge. That's 24.2% of the total number of entries (520) in that challenge. This leads to the conclusion that people are interested in entering but not voting on that challenge. Why should we continue doing it?

I'm sure the first line of defense for keeping it is that we just don't have time to vote on 520 photos. We have time to make photos for them though...

Maybe if you split them into 4 categories as was suggested once before.

- Minimal
- Basic
- Advanced
- Expert

This would not only lower the entries (especially if they were staggered one a week) but more interest and happy campers would come of it as you could only enter one category per month. This in turn would dwell more views per entry and possibly more votes.

I agree with this idea. By doing this, you are eliminating over entry of a challenge. When people go to vote and see that 500+ have entered, a lot of the times they feel overwhelmed and decide not to vote, because they have to meet 20% which can be very time consuming for 500+ entries.

I can see why it would appeal to people entering but how would this entice voting?

I suspect if the number of entries is smaller, voting doesn't seem as daunting a task.

a "surprise"-free study like a long while ago was pretty cool!

That's right. How often do you see small numbered challenges getting heaps of views and suprising amounts of votings...the same thing will occur...as people who don't like one type of editing may avoid going into that challenge...but they will concentrate their voting on another editing style.

Thats true. I can see people voting 100% more on the challenge they choose to vote in but I'm not sure how this would entice people to vote on all 4 free studies because that would still be the same amount of entries as the ones we have now. I think it's more a matter of not having enough time to vote and breaking it up doesn't change that. But who knows. I'm all for trying new things and even if it didn't achieve that goal it would be a benefit to those submitting at least.

Quarterly free study. 4 times a year, when seasons starts.

also, 1 month voting period per study challenge.

I thought the concept was to stagger the FS's then, one per week, but you can only enter one per month. You wouldn't have all 4 going at the same time, so the numbers would be smaller. I think. :P

I like having a FS every month. There's always some shot that didn't work it's way into a challenge theme that I really like. The FS is perfect for that IMO.

I hope that's the case but I would expect the expert challenge to get most of the entries but it would be nice if those who don't like them on principle stay away from voting on them. ;)

Ah ok. I didn't consider that.

Well that would be nice. But as it is, at the moment they are all competing against each other. So, for example, if an expert editing is voted down in a standard FS...then they will not do as well as one of their rivals which might have been a Basic Editing.

Now if you suddenly have that same Expert entry in a challenge where its only rivals are also Expert entries...and that voter comes in and marks everyone down because of the 'Expert Editing' tag...then they are all in the same quandry.

It makes them compete against their own kind...not against someone elses. And if someone enters a Basic Editing image against Expert Editing (example only) then that is the risk they take....a low vote simply because of the challenge label.

Limit the number of entries. Once a certain quota has been reached, submission closes.

It's not a secret that I'm not a fan of the Expert Editing rules. Just not my flavor I guess. My biggest gripe WAS the mixing of ruleset types in a FS when it was run with Expert Editing rules.

Should I venture into a FS (to vote) where all the entries were being judged against each other under Expert Editing rules I'd be much more relaxed about it. I'd know it was basically a free-for-all, anything goes kind of challenge - no wondering about whether a photo was "real" or not.

I think the Expert Editing challenge entries would get a fairer shake and I think the overall scores would be higher. JMO of course.

An idea that could work. But, would you have a photo locked when entered, so that the submission doesn't just buy a ticket into the FS, and holds the place for that photog to change it at a later date?
