ps2 games can be played on the ps3

the main difference is just better technology allowing for better graphics and more sophisticated games

as well any new games that are made solely for the ps3 cant be played on the ps2

Except the new 40gb one. Actually not every ps2 game will play on the ps3 with the other PS3s'. I believe there's at least 3 different PS3 system at one point.

I would say go with the PS2 as there's more games for the system and they are a lot cheaper. New games may start at $30.

If you have a high end tv and teenagers then they may want a PS3. Not too much variety of games as yet for the system The games for PS3 are $60.

If you want more variety and you are willing to get the newest games then a X-box 360 might be the better choice.

Yes, they are still making ps2 games.

I heard that they may reduce the PS2 to $99 around Christmas time. If they are I will be buying one. I have a first generation PS2 and it's having some problems with newer games.

Is it safe to say that if I buy a ps2 it will be the "newer" version?

I've recently did a lot of research on this being in the same predicament as my son had a TON of PS2 games that he still plays. From what I've read, the "older" PS3 consoles that came out last year have hardware that make it backwards compatible with the PS and PS2 games. The newer versions with either a 40 gig or 80 gig drive don't have that piece of hardware, but rely on software patches to play the PS2/PS games, which are not available for all games. You can check here to see if your old PS2 game is compatible.

So all said, the 80gig Motorstorm PS3 is arriving tomorrow. If I get a chance without him being here, I'll have to test it out before his birthday... you know, just to make sure it works ok. ;-)

If you adopt me I can explain the difference to you and why you should by two PS3's. (giggle giggle)

My recollection from reading engadget postings and IGN articles...the older PS3s did in fact use hardware to provide backward compatibility. The newer PS3s (cheaper, smaller hard drive models) provide backward compatibility through software "emulation". This means that certain games from the PS2 may not be able to be played on the PS3 until the proper software is created for it.

Still, the major difference between the two consoles is the Blu-Ray DVD player on the PS3. It drives up the cost, but it is considered worth the price of entry if you have an HD TV.

Two more words...Xbox 360. No console or PC game network has ever enabled a more seamless and engaging online multiplayer experience.

However the Next-Gen DVD battle hasn't been won yet, and some of the studios are already jumping off the sony bandwagon to take sides with (Toshiba) and HD-DVD.

I resent that fact. yes Xbox live is totally awsome, even though you have to pay for it... it dose have the best onlime multiplayer. BUT. PC has a better multiplayer/network support. and you can upgrade your pc. xbox. well, its xbox, untill you buy xbox360, and then the next xbox... and the next... and so on.:) pC you just upgrade. multiplayer is free for all games except mmorpg's... and a pc has more processing power than some xbox360 could ever do

just one more question, dose x360 allow 64vs64 (128 total playerS) in bf2 like the pc version dose?

I hear you, but I've gone down the PC upgrade path plenty of times and learned my lesson. *For me*, a console that can do 93% of what a PC can and look 82% as good doing it...while in my living room...on my $2000 home theater speakers...without hunching over a keyboard...wirelessly...is a beautiful thing.

And for what it's worth, I also think the Wii freakin rocks. The innovation in the controller alone is unreal.
