Time to sign up for the November Walkabout – November 22-25, 2007

Time for the November Walkabout. I thought we could use the four-day Thanksgiving weekend for the challenge this month. When your eyes glaze over from too much beer, football or crazy Aunt Maggie, grab your camera and head outside. For those outside of the U.S., just look at it as an extended window for your walkabout.

As always, the idea is to improve our ability to see an image by forcing us to focus on, and see the beauty in, the mundane and ordinary ... or at least what we often perceive as the mundane and ordinary part of everyday life. Sometimes beauty can be found in the ordinary places or objects we walk by every day without a second glance; other times it can be in a beautiful place discovered at the end of a path we've walked by but never taken the time to walk down before.

The process is simple: Get a whole bunch of people to take their cameras out on the same weekend, walk somewhere familiar to them, and see what kind of images we come up with. Walk with your eyes wide open -- The journey is the destination.

Here's the rules:

1. The challenge starts from a place that is familiar to you, and that you regularly visit during a normal week. You may not travel to any special location for the shoot. Good starting places would be your home, your work, your school, or the grocery store where you regularly shop. The idea is to start from a familiar location which you wouldn’t ordinarily think of as a place to go take pictures. (Even unfamiliar places can sometimes be a good place for a walkabout, especially if you’re not there to see the sights. If you’re traveling for Thanksgiving this month, feel free to start from the place you’re staying, or the place you’re sharing your Thanksgiving meal at – just try to pick a place that you wouldn’t ordinarily think of as a great location for a photo shoot.)

2. You must leave your starting place on foot. No other mode of travel is permitted. To preserve the serendipitous nature of this challenge, pictures should not be taken at your starting location, but should be taken somewhere off the premises.

3. Your picture must be taken between 12:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. (local time) on a single day during the challenge period, November 22-25.

4. Advanced editing rules apply. Or not. You decide. The focus should be on the image not the processing, but if you want to layer on a texture you found on your walkabout, or share a triptych of similar subjects, go for it. It’s your challenge!

Optional Rules

Treasure Hunt – Found Object
The treasure for this month's walkabout is a Found Object, such as a child's toy or someone's shoe or glove, that doesn't belong to anyone you know.

(thanks to Pug-H, the “winner” of last month's Treasure Hunt, for the suggestion! He’ll pick the winner for this month’s hunt, who gets to pick the treasure for the next walkabout.)

November’s Personal Challenge – Eyes in the Back of Your Head
When taking pictures, we of course focus on the subject of our photograph and try to isolate it in its environment to block out distracting backgrounds and other elements. Sometimes, in doing so, we miss other pictures. This month, when you find yourself captivated by a subject, after you are done shooting it, turn around 180 degrees and find another subject to shoot. Share what you find in your posts!

Posting & Commenting
Images should be uploaded to the November Walkabout Posting Thread, which will be created the day before the challenge starts.

You should post no more than five images. All images should be uploaded in a single post.

Try to include a little narrative in your post, telling us where you went, what you did, and how or why you found the images you did.

Please try to comment on as many images you can the following week (Nov. 26-30). Commenting on this challenge is as much fun as participating.

After all the entries are in, feel free to post your favorites in the Walkabout Hall of Fame thread!

Sign up in this thread if you're interested!

Also a good way to work off some calories, so you can subsequently eat even more and drink even more beer. Sounds like a good plan.

yep...count me in! I have my new MP3 player so I walkabout a lot after I get home from school. I hope the neighborhood offers something or I'll just be dancing in the streets with a camera listing to music.

Great to see some new faces joining us, along with more old ones! Added you all in.

Don't worry Quigley, we're glad to have you back. Life sometimes trumps DPC. Just make sure you leave a comment on the picture of dsterner dancing in the street, if we're lucky enough to see one!
