i recently went to purchase a new nikon lens (12-24 wide angle)from a dealer online. i ordered the lens and then a few days later got an email saying i needed to call them for confirmation. When I called the conversation went somehting like this...

Oh we see you are purchasing the nikon 12-24 lens. What kind of camera do you have? D70. Oh you do realize that this lens isn't suited well and will shoot at 18mm. At this time they suggested I go with the Sigma 10-20mm. I declined after a bit of listening though. At this point the guy asks me if i want the plastic mount with the lens or the metal...This seemed odd as I had never seen a difference and I've done a bit of research. So I said I asked for the standard, which he said was plastic as metal is $300 more. Conversation ends done.

I got an email today saying they are out of the lens and it will be 6 to 8 weeks before they get anymore. So now I'm really wondering 3 things... Is there a plastic and a metal mount for this lens? If not I'm pretty sure they are using bait and switch tactics hence the need to confrim via the phone. If that's the case are their legal actions that could be taken. I'm not looking to sue them but I think they should at least remove the faulty ad...Thoughts?

Thanks much if you made it through this!!! LL

There is only one kind of mount.

Sounds like they were going for the bait and switch.

It's an expensive lens. What price were they advertising it for?

I would cancel your order, sounds like a disreputable dealer. Did you look them up on resellerratings.com.

Try buydig.com. I just bought the Sigma 10-20 from them for the Nikon, it was the best price I found: $440 or so.

But whomever you buy from, look them up on resellerratings. There are a lot of BAD sellers out there.

This is an extremely common business practice of several online electronics retailers. Take my advice, cancel your order immediately, and buy the lens from a more reputable place like B&H Photo Video or Adorama. What's the name of this place your ordered it from?

I am betting we can find a whole bunch of horror stories about this place.

www.expresscameras.com is the company. DO NOT BUY FROM THEM!!!!

i called them back to discuss and actually played a bit dumb into there hand just to see where it would go. they continued to try and sell me the metal mount and the sigma. once they said they did have the metal mount in stock i flipped it and showed my cards at which point they hung up. i'm in the process of filling out a bbb complaint and talked to a friend fresh out of law school with some free time that's going to push some paper there way for free. :) not sure it will do much but i'll go to bed with a smile knowing they will probably have to pay a lawyer to respond.

thanks for all responses.

You might get a kick out of this site. Here's the ExpressCameras storefront. It's actually one of the more "business like" of the many NYC ripoff stores, but interestingly, as the photographer notes, they were open when he took this. Here's their new location.

Got to trust a company that offers a Nikon D200 body, new, for $499 on the main page. Note that there is NO WAY they would sell you that camera, without you buying enough overpriced accessories to pay for the real price. See Resellerratings.com for the details (from individuals) on how this scam works.

And if you are serious about pursuing them legally, read the "review" from 11/2 on their resellerratings page. That fellow got ripped off for $200. But they are thankfully already being sued by the NJ attorney general.

And here is the lawsuit

General rule of thumb is if it looks too good to be true. . . Yeah there are about 7 New York sellers out of Brooklyn that are nothing but bait and switch. You MUST buy accessories and all the Canon stuff is grey. They pad their stats on several sites to make it look like they are reputable, but reseller does a nice job of revealing the truth. My personal rule of thumb is if it is more than 10% - 15% better than B&H I need to do days worth of research into the company before doing any purchasing. Additionally, FACTORY FRESH does not mean FACTORY SEALED LOL.
