Ah, so they're finally selling them! They were in testing for ages, it seemed. Their web site is //www.eye.fi/

Q: What if my camera takes CompactFlash (CF) or MemoryStick?

A: We'll soon offer a CompactFlash adapter that will allow you to use the Eye-fi SD card in DSLRs and other cameras that take CompactFlash. (We've been testing several to see which is best.)

How cool is that?

Very cool, but keep in mind no RAW support and no RAW transfers. :(

I didn't notice that. Not so cool.

I think skipping the RAW xmit MIGHT be an advantage. I could see shooting RAW+JPG(small or medium) in camera and having the JPG flash to a laptop for review in the session. You would then have the RAW for post work. Could work very nicely in a studio type environment.

At first glance this looks really cool... But:

<-------From the web FAQ------->
Q: What if my computer's off?

A: Eye-fi always sends all your photos to Eye-fi's secure servers first. From there, they go to your selected photo sharing sites, and to your computer next time it's online. (You can also choose to send your photos only to an online service, or only to your computer.)

Q: Can I upload photos directly to my computer without an Internet connection?

A: No. Eye-fi must have a live Internet connection in order to upload photos. (You can still take photos without a connection, and they'll upload next time you have one.)
<---------------------------->

So basically you have to upload the photos to the web, and then pull them down, or at least that's how I read it...

I was just checking this out and noticed they have the CF adapter now and this was in the FAQ as well:

Q: Can I upload photos directly to my computer without an Internet connection?

A: Yes! If your Eye-Fi is setup only to send photos to your computer, it can do this without a net connection. You'll still need a wireless access point, and access to the Internet to complete intiial setup. (If you want to send photos to an online photo sharing service, You can still take photos without a connection. They'll upload next time you have one.)

Where does it say that on their site, out of curiosity? Everything I'm seeing says the only thing they offer is the SD card version.

EDIT: I see this in the FAQ of the photojojo site, but the //www.eye.fi site makes no mention of it.

Looks like a new way for people to steal your photographs. Don't really see the point unless you're a photojournalist/sports photographer who needs to get their photos to their editor as quickly as possible.

? Steal my photos if I am uploading them to my computer?

I figured when in studio it might be easier for me because the computer is in the next room. They upload as I take them. Then when finished with a shoot the model/client and I just walk to the next room and review the photos.

Alan you are right there is no mention of it on the product site but it is on the photojojo site. Either way I may try it.

I have a really dumb question.

Wi-Fi works with a network, correct? There actually has to be a router, hub, gateway for Wi-Fi to work?

In other words, the Eye-fi card can not talk to a Wi-Fi enabled computer directly without the network, correct?
12/09/2007 10:33:05 AM · #18
you need a wireless access point. in other words the WiFi capable computer is only that. capable of connecting to an available network.

without an IP assigned by the network the eye-fi wouldn't know who the computer was - as the router assigns that info when the computer is turned on.

at least that's how i would imagine it works.

here's your answer:

This thing could be sweet at parties and other events... if you had an assistant to handle printing and cash... you could sell in real time
