want to upgrade
have d50 and am thinking about going to a d80 before a big trip
will it make that big of a difference -- other than 4 pixels er so??
landscape... portrait....animals.... thats what it will be used for...
or should I buy a tamron 200 - 500 mm and just play with that to make myself happy for a while??

Depends on what you are trying to get out of the D80.
The 4 megapixels alone isn't necessarily a good reason to upgrade.
There are a ton of other features of the D80 may be of use, though it really depends how you use your camera now and what you would like to have. Is there some specific feature you are looking for?

Cheers.

The D80 is certainly a better camera than the D50, but unless there's a certain feature on the D80 that you're looking for, you probably won't see much of a change in the quality of your pictures. You'll see more of a difference by spending the money on a high quality lens or two.

thats pretty much what I needed to hear .... I really have been wanting a micro lens... and I think I will just do that instead.....I was worried that I needed an upgrade in order to have the quality of the pics... maybe I will hold out for a D3 ... lol..... not gonna happen soon.

I'd advise building your lens collection before adding anew body to your list.

I have a D50 too! Is the D80 good enough to upgrade to? I say, no. Unless you want/need the extra bells a whistles.
I would either get the D200/D300 or invest in some good glass.
