Just wanted to share our gift from nature today.

Timewarp two weeks and a couple of days ago. My son comes home from grandmas and has a new "pet". Now usually when this happens we now actually have a new pet. Thats how we ended up with goldfish, chickens, rabbits, and frogs as pets. My son is a lover of all animals big and small. And its fun, except when they come live with us and then I have to take care of them. Anyway back to the story.

Todays pet is a cool catepiller. So he tells us how its going to turn into a butterfly and he puts it in his bug box.(sorry no pictures they are on the wifes camera as I didnt take any) 2 days later this thing actually makes a Chrysalis. Again no pictures, they are on the wifes camera. Well to our surprise yesterday morning this beautiful black and orange butterfly emerges from the chrysalis. Way too busy and cold yesterday to let it go, so we decide to keep it in the bug box until this afternoon when its warmer. We put in some fruit and hope it stays fed overnight. Today we let it go out in the yard.(here are some pics)

He was so excited that it stayed and visited a bit, as if to thank him for helping it transform into this beautiful butterfly. Then just as quickly as it was ours, it was natures again. Normally we would have some tears now, but not this time, he was just happy to have witnessed the wonder of nature. I was so excited watching him through the viewfinder I took 131 photos in the matter of about 5 minutes. Anyway no other reason to post other then to share. The shots are snapshotty, but will be something I'll cherish forever, along with the memories of watching my son and nature become one, even if just for a few minutes.

Back to your normally scheduled forum activity.

Tell your son congratulations!!! It's a pretty cool feeling to watch something like that grow and change into something completely different. Sounds like he did a great job taking care of the little guy---no easy task. I tried three different caterpillars this summer and only one really survived to full-fledged "butterflyhood."

Those are great shots :-) You and he will both look back at them fondly in all the years to come.
