I love the little freshness packets you find in packages of beef jerky, etc. that keep the food fresh, and say "Warning: Do not eat". Would someone actually eat one of these?!!

The labels and warnings on products may seem silly, but they are likely there because at some point the manufacturer was sued by someone who did whatever the label warns against and won because there was no warning.

I sell candles, and my RVP told us of this one time a lady called her up and said that we should warn people NOT to take a bath with candles floating in the bathtub.... she tried it and burned her nipple! LOL

Somewhere, someone did one of those things.... it's just so funny to think how dumb people can really be! :)

sometimes we, translators, feel offended for having studied a lot and finishing by translating this kind of product warnings. well, even running the risk of not being accurate enough, here is the origin of such warnings (at least among translators): a woman used a spermicid in her bread (yes, as if it was butter) and, of course, ended by getting pregnant. SHe sued the company and gained A LOT of money.
from then on, companies have been trying to protect themselves from dumb people...

I read of a case several years ago where a bicyclist sued a bicycle manufactor for an outrageous amount of money. His claim -- He had been riding down a hill at night and was struck by a car. He figured it was the manufactor's fault because the bike had reflectors, but no warning that it was dangerous to ride at night. But, of course.

go look at a new motorcycle in the store and all the warning stickers
Few other fun ones that are my faves.
Bottom of styrofoam cup. Do not turn cup upside down. (How do you read this warning then?)

On a Stihl chainsaw. Keep away/Do not stop chain with arms, legs, or groin. ( you know someone had to actually do this to have the warning there).

Poor companies have to protect themselves with stupid/common sense warnings, that seem pretty obvious to everyone. Like the McDonalds coffee. That lady was in the drive thru and put the damn hot cup of coffee between her legs and then drove off! Her lawyers made it sound like she was old and feeble and spilt it off the table into her lap inside the store. Do we not know that coffee is hot? sheesh!

The warning about the soda cap, and the pressure, isnt that dumb, I was one day opening a dr pepper, and the cap came flying off and missed my face by just a few inches. Had that hit me in the eye, it could have been quite serious.

There was the "unusual" one about the Winnebago owner who thought cruise control was an auto pilot. Or the one about the woman who sued a fast food chain because she tripped over a toddler running around and scalded herself BUT the child was her own!

I live in the UK and some of the staggering things folk in other countries do and then expect corporations to pay for their idiotic behaviour leaves me speechless. Such legal actions IMHO hurt the geniune cases where injury or death has occurred because of corporate negligance ~ sadly I think the UK is becoming more litigious.

Still some of the warning notices raise a wry smile.

Our ER has the wall mounts. All the things pulled out of people. Some interesting things there (but none of the...ummmmm...personal items) LOL
