I have no idea how this is done.

I tried several times, and the darn "game" is psychic.

You give it a try, and tell me how this is done.

Creepy.

Your answer will always be a multiple of 9. When you add the digits together, you are getting the difference between your first number and a multiple of nine, so subtracting it will bring your number to a multiple of nine. It is because the sum of the digits of any multiple of 9 adds to 9. Notice that all multiples of nine correspond to the same symbol, and therefore the "magic gopher" is always correct.

And they randomly show you a different symbol for multiples of 9 each time, so when you do it repeatedly, you don't always see the same symbol.

Let's use algebra to prove it, people:

If your number is ab (i.e. 43, a=4, b=3). So, to get 43, you multiply a*10 and add b. The gopher tells you to subtract a+b, so:

a*10+b - (a+b) =
a*10-a + b-b =
a*9

Therefore, the result is assuredly a multiple of 9. In fact, always (first digit times 9). And as stated above, all the multiples of 9 show the same symbol.

Magic Algebra! =D

I understand the math and all that. I kind of figured there was some sort of math involved.

HOWEVER, without me, or you, or anyone else typing into the game the numbers we have chosen. Keeping the number close to the vest. Not showing our hand, as it were.

HOW DID THE GOPHER KNOW WHICH SYMBOL TO PICK????

Answer me this question, and I will sleep better tonight.

They change the symbols every time you play the game. But look closely at the chart next time; note that EVERY number divisible by 9 has the same symbol (along with a few that are not divisible by 9, for window dressing). Because it is the nature of the equation that the end result will always be divisible by 9, the gopher always has the right symbol.

Now, if your gopher actually gave you the NUMBER you had picked, THAT would be eerie :-)
