Fair warning to anyone looking to select their mentor - don't choose me if you are interested in portraiture. My strengths are capitalizing on available lighting, especially in the flora/fauna realm and macro.

if mentorships get given out to the over 6's I'll join the queue . .

But it would be nice if the thread could be held open for a few days to encourage other low scorers to get some help if they want it :- )

OK...I threw my name in the ring for a much needed online mentor. I need some "basics". Since my camera is basic, I need my information geared towards the philosphy of " It's the photograph(er), not the equipment"...any brave souls inclined?.......

Thanks for your PM's May the Lord have mercy on your souls

Welcome to the MAK-Mentor. let's get it started and be the first team to hit a ribbon for you ladies. I hope I am up to the job, whatever, we will have great fun trying. Thank you for choosing me.

I'm going to learn so much from this, I do believe. Thanks MAK!

I like the idea of the DPL-type situations but that would be asking a lot of the site admins. What I would suggest to all the mentorees is if you are not already on a DPL team, consider joining one (or forming one) when it comes around again on the guitar. It's VERY helpful to have five or six other people tell you you're nuts to consider entering THAT picture and make you go out and shoot again. And again. And again. Seriously, having the threads in which to discuss shots and editing and such helped even yours truly. (Though I do offer thanks for the patience of my teammates who I know secretly cringe from time to time...)

In the mean time, you can work through PMs and comments on individual shots, and if helping with challenge entries (upon which you will not vote, of course) you can use the workshop folder and provide image IDs.

Thank you so much Deb! I am looking forward to some helpful advice. I love your comments!

I would love to join the list of apprentices, about to send off a pm to a mentor(fingers crossed they're not taken).
10/15/2007 05:54:05 PM · #107
I'm willing to mentor somebody in the basics. However, I cannot offer advice on how to resist entering the occasional piece of crap, because I still do that sometimes.

I think this is a wonderfull idea and its really what DPC is about IMHO, learning.

I'd love to put my hand up as an apprentice, I am fully capable of selecting, shooting and submitting crap and now would love to try my hand at Mediocre ;P

I'd like to pair up with someone as a student...I have so many entries scoring in low percentile - then suddenly I broke 6 (A FLUKE!)...which makes me think I missing something as far as learning.

ETA: My gear doesn't help much either. An upgrade through school generosity. I am struggling to learn.

A possibly way to start out, is to go thru your mentees recent entries and comment on them, point out whats good, whats bad and most important, what could be done to improve. go through the comments the shot received and see what the voters liked/didn't like about it..

Honesty really is best here, if something is poor, tell them, thats what they need/want to hear and is the first step to improving!

I am not actively contacting people to become mentors, this thread has had a lot of visibility on the frontpage today so they may well of seen it, so if they want to offer their services then its upto them. There are a few I would love to see get involved, but thats upto them. I wont PM them.

OK - I have had 2 requests that I will take on board - slickchik and gwe21. Give me a week or two and I will dig into your portfolios. I will shoot them each out a PM later on tonight and get organized.

And dsterner - you know you can always use me too. ;)

I desperately need HELP, and would love a mentor who has folowed my style, but can see my faults with processing, and guide me in the right direction.

I use photoshop for my processing, and I really have no idea how to correct my faults/mistakes.

I love it to be someone I know, especially one of our DPC leading processing photographers, to contact me please, to be my mentor.....

Bassbone has been kind to me in comments - I'd love to learn from him. I'd love to learn from Bear Music as well - natural light interests me

Sorry about the hiatus - it's been bedtime down here in Oz.

I put myself on the apprentice list because I consider myself a beginner and I'm in constant awe of the photos that appear in the free studies and other member challenges. But I'm here to learn, and I think one of the best ways to learn is by teaching.

So, put my name on the mentor list. I'll give it a go (if anyone will have me!).
