FWIW, to the naysayers? The pricing is actually rather competitive with other professional products. I just took a look at the Working With Artists class offerings and the most comparable classes are MORE expensive.

Joe is a pro who knows his shit. I can't afford it, but I'm okay with that.

Yep pricing is okey and I can afford it too. But won't be buying it. This is not a kind a photography I wish to do. I do not like this style, so won't be buying it.

Was any of your comment truly necessary or even germane to the discussion at hand. A simple "Not interested" would have provided us with the insight that you are not inclined to purchase the product.

Ray

He has his opinion about the style Joey uses, and you have to defend Joey? Obviously, Joey is a big boy, and I'm sure he can defend himself. If you don't like someones opinion of his work, to bad. Don't tell the person what they should or shouldn't say because you don't like it. I, persona1ly, do not like his style of work overall, but he does come up with some interesting pics.

Hey Joey, do I get a discount for being the first person to sign up for the original DVD? More importantly, does the new DVD come with really good looking models? I need a good looking model...

Seriously, though, pleased to have met you this summer and you're more than well on your way to being one of those "I knew him when" kinda guys. Keep up the great work!

1) He is not sharing, he is selling! That's what charging money for something means.

2) The price is Joey's business, no matter what we think of it (but that doesn't mean nobody should be allowed to talk about it). If Joey prefers to sell a few at a higher price rather than loads more for less, it is his choice.

3) I can't wait to see how the SC will handle the very next person's (who isn't of Joey's "fame") wish to advertise their wares! I bet I wouldn't have been allowed to do this!

4) I agree with Zaar on this:

It may not be the case, there are people who can afford to spend this much but do not see any point in doing so. Just that someone does not want to buy is not automatic can not afford case.

Can you say Favoritism???

Well price aside, I can honestly say that I would have gleaned less enjoyment from photography if I would not have seen Joey's first DVD. His art inspired me and opened my eyes to a world of photography that I would have never known. I would have been stuck taking pictures of flowers and bugs, but now I take pictures of bands and chicks...lol I am sure that it is worth every penny and more.

I'm not reading the entire thread, but my take on it is that some people have a sense of entitlement like they are due a lower price because of this or that.

I say if you don't want it, or don't think it is priced right for you, then don't buy it. I bought the first one and may not buy this one, but I certainly have no issue with whatever an artist charges for his expertise. Many photographers and painters have vast experience and knowledge but keep their "secret" there own, so BRAVO to Joey for his willingness to share. And if it makes him some dough along the way, then good for him.

"Are you a professional photographer? No, I watched a Joey Lawrence DVD and spent the night at a Holiday Inn Express!"
10/15/2007 06:23:38 PM · #183
I agree with your price.

Why? Because if you lower price, then the general public can get it.
And what will we get if that will be the case?
Lots of photos that are post-processed the same way and the photography world will be a boring, grungy, dodgy-burny kind of place!

And if it's expensive, only those with moolah can get it AND money doesn't necessarily equate with talent. ;-)

Goodluck young man!

See Joey got some advertising over at strobist also.... worth it for the interview bit, but I suspect there will be no shortage of buyers.

One thing I disagree with you... not everyone has the same taste. Even if the program or whatever he uses would be free available, maybe I would experiment a few photos, but I truly think I wouldn't continue same style more than a few photos... because it's not me.

Photography is like people's faces, everyone has different style even looks the same, is not. One more thing, if even that thing would be free, I am pretty sure people would try their own new ways, not default Joey way :)

So, I see this only applies to my posts. How about some consistency?

(Not sure what happened to my original post, it must have been submitted because this thread showed up in my "Last 10 Forum Threads Posted To".
Oh well, must have been the case of delete a post and don't inform the poster)

I read Joey's interview on Strobist and was disappointed that he showed no love for DPC!
What gives man? :(

lol dpc is only a site not the center of every photographers life
10/16/2007 01:23:16 PM · #193
I wish him all the luck, but as others have said or implied the DPC is no place for commercial advertising. If the SC allows his advertising here it sets a bad example that could allow the flood gates to open potentially ruining the forums with every Tom, Dick & Harry selling their wares. And if they don’t allow others then the SC is playing favorites. Either way the posting should be removed.
10/16/2007 02:32:42 PM · #194
And should this be removed as well?

He's offering something he feels would be of interest and help to fellow photographers, not a whole lot different than if it were made by one of his friends and he wanted to share the info.

I feel it belongs here, tho' I do think there could be another buy/sell section for non-hardware items.

Congrats, Joey, and keep reaching for the stars! :)

Didn't you read the interview in After Capture? Cheer up mate :-)

Hahaha, I watched the first three lessons so far. Damn you Joey! I did an outdoor portrait session last weekend and now I want to re-edit their favourites with some of the techniques you showed for extra pop.

Very handy techniques I wish I'd known about already, they would have saved me a lot of time and grief. And contrary to many peoples' beliefs, they don't need to lead to the grungy style at all, but can just plain improve the shots.

Simple ways to improve on the ways I typically shoot. I have another portrait session this coming weekend and I'm looking forward to it a lot more now, I'm inspired.

Can't wait to watch the rest of the lessons. So far I find them very easy to watch, but I'll be going though them again and again. Great techniques and I find it most valuable to actually be able to watch the tools move around on the photos, that's half the learning experience for me.

I'm stoked & inspired! I'm glad I got this just for the first three lessons!

:-)

So... you think can finally get that blue ha?

We'll see, you get a blue in one month, using Joey's technique, that will be the best advertisement for his DVD

Hell you could probably even take a class or two at a local community college.

I've taken a couple of college courses. Joey's a working pro shooting doing commercial work... the teacher at the local college, not.

Edit: should have read entire thread.... same point made many times.

Yeah, just ribbing you.
Congrats on the success.
