Me, too (impressed, I mean - my tagline's fine). Three of this weeks crop are really excellent, and there are a lot of 7s and 8s. I think that shooting in B/W mode and looking through the LCD at a B/W world (for those who can do that) can be inspirational.
06/03/2002 12:12:44 PM · #4
My camera doesn't support B&W, so I had to think like a dog!
06/03/2002 12:20:54 PM · #5
Yeah -- what B&W mode -- some of us had to think in terms of B&W while shooting color -- you know, the old fashioned way??? *grin* Death to all you modern technologists...

Hey, I can't, either. Have before, though, and I can see how it would help people get into the proper frame of mind.

How do you guys feel about black and white for action shots? I saw a few GREAT shots that I felt just really didn't work as black and white -- mostly action shots.

I'm really finding the idea of rating this week's submissions intimidating! There are some I really like from their thumbnails, and I've clicked on a few to look at them, but I feel like I'm going to give almost everything 9s or something. I gave 26 9s last week! Needless to say, many of them ended up ranked very low. I guess I'm starting to really feel like the excercise of rating all these photos is a bit pointless :/

On the other hand, my score this week started in the 3s, as usual, but now after 45 votes is over 5!!! Unheard of! If it stays up it'll be the first time I've scored that high :) But then again, if everyone's rating high in general I'll probably still rank low in the end... oh well.

lisae..you should put what score make YOU happy.

When I submit my stuff..I have had my fun making it. Now it's up to you guys to have some fun looking at it, loving it, hating it, scratching your head over it. And whatever you want to put on it is cool by me :-)

I feel bad for all you tortured voters ...:-) have fun...of course ..you might LIKE being tortured..which is a WHOLE OTHER PHOTO CHALLENGE!!

it's ok to give every pic the score *you* think it deserves. there's not like a quota, nor can you use up the 9's or anything like that : )

It's just the feeling I have that I wander through the challenges a bit like that art teacher on the episode of the Simpsons where Marge paints Burns's portrait. He looks at some workmen painting a stair rail or something and says "Another triumph!!" I respond to the ideas people have a lot more than I do to their technical prowess, and find little things about all kinds of photos that please me that no one else seems to find. So in the end I rate high and end up feeling as though I haven't done my duty in judging the photos critically, especially since my opinions never correlate very well with the final ranking. It's one thing to say that being out of step with everyone else is just a sign of your own personal taste, vision, whatever, which you should be proud of, but when you're reminded week after week that you're an "outlier", it gets wearing. I don't know, it's a difficult feeling to explain.

I've voted on a few photos now because I can't sleep (it's after 2am here), so maybe I'm over it :)

i'm an outlier, too! thoroughly and completely out of step! and what do they say about outliers? like snowflakes, no two are alike? well maybe i'm taking liberties with my metaphor haha but it's true.

i myself tend to favor the offbeat, the original or the somewhat unconventional. an unusual or an original thought process that led to a result. a well done execution helps, too. i believe my 5 top ranked pics came out 2, 8, 18, 22, and 23, in no particular order. 31, 46,52,92, and 94 all also got pretty good scores from me.

but i know i'm not in the mainstream. that suits me fine. if i was in the mainstream, i wouldn't be me, now would I have had the life I've had, which for the most part has been pretty darn interesting <g>.

what's my point? not sure. trying to cheer ya up, i guess

Aww... thanks magnetic :). It's so cool that you liked Reuben's photo, because he wasn't going to submit it, but when I said I liked it he changed his mind. I said it made me want to draw a thought bubble in all that space and fill it in :)
